Job summary

Responsibilities

  • Organizes and processes patient specimens and supports gross lab function.
  • Develops competence in grossing simple surgical pathology specimens and dictations, with supervision.
  • Maintains quality control, proper instrument function and macros usage where applicable.
  • Mentors new staff and contributes to safety and compliance in the lab.

Reports to: Histologist Supervisor

Location: Pathology Lab - Denver West Location

Position Summary:

Gastroenterology of the Rockies is a rapidly growing Gastroenterology practice in Boulder County and the greater Denver Metro area with eight office locations and five Ambulatory Surgery Centers.

The Grossing Technician performs and assists with the gross examination of surgical tissue specimens.This is done through evaluation of quality control, proper instrument care and maintenance and strict adherence to protocols for tissue handling and processing.This position utilizes professional judgment, knowledge, and leadership to develop new methods, educate others, improve systems and demonstrate responsibility for administrative duties in the laboratory.The Grossing Technician works under the direction of the Chief Operating Officer and the Pathologist, works closely with the Histologist, other laboratory staff and members of the health care team to provide quality service to our patients.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Utilizes leadership skills to organize and process patient specimens and facilitate overall function of the gross lab.Assures quality results through the use and evaluation of quality control, proper instrument functions and collection, processing, and analysis of the appropriate samples.
  • Develops a thorough knowledge or demonstrates prior competence in the grossing of simple surgical pathology specimens, including dissection, appropriate gross dictations, and knowledge/ use of macros, under the direction and supervision of pathologist or pathologists' assistant.May assist Pathologist or other physicians with frozen specimens or grossing of specimens.
  • Identifies current professional and technical issues and their impact on lab practices.Maintains appropriate accreditation by regulatory agencies.Evaluates and implements new methods and instrumentation.
  • Works and communicates cooperatively with team members to identify and complete lab responsibilities and meet department goals.Participates in department activities to improve patient care/lab systems, shares new information with all team members, attends team meetings and effectively orients/mentors' new staff as requested.
  • Maintains current knowledge and skills applicable to job assignment through continuing education or professional organizations.Follows all procedures and policies and demonstrates competency and proficiency as required.
  • In addition to the responsibilities described above, the role may include other responsibilities and duties as assigned on occasion, based upon company needs or requirements.
  • Follows safety standards in all aspects of performance of the above functions, reports/removes unsafe equipment and attends safety education sessions.
  • Performs other tasks and projects as assigned by the management team.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Associate degree in chemical, physical or biological science or medical laboratory or equivalent education and training
  • Laboratory training, experience in a Pathology lab preferred.
  • Excellent ability to communicate verbally and in written form with staff, vendors, and customers.
  • High level ability to function as a member of a team, with the ability to work self-sufficiently
  • Excellent computer skills and the able to operate machinery with attention to detail.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
  • This position is primarily sedentary and requires the ability to remain seated for extended periods, with occasional standing, walking, and use of a computer and standard office equipment.
  • This position requires frequent standing and walking within the laboratory, use of hands for handling specimens and operating equipment, and occasional lifting of up to 25 pounds. Duties may involve bending, reaching, and repetitive motions.
  • Substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers. The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading.
