• Prepare Histology and Cytology specimens with correct patient and specimen IDs.
• Assist in gathering and compiling quality improvement statistics.
• Keep inventory of supplies current.

Position Summary

Retrieves surgical and cytology specimens from various hospital departments for processing within the histology laboratory. Assists in the preparation and handling of specimens to support accurate and timely pathological evaluation. Performs routine cleaning, maintenance, and quality checks of histology equipment, supports efficient laboratory workflow, and ensures compliance with regulatory, quality, and safety standards. Maintains accurate specimen identification and handling throughout the testing process to support high-quality patient care.

Responsibilities

• Logs in specimen assigning each an accession number.
• Processes Cytology specimens and assists Pathologists when grossing. Performs basic staining procedures.
• Maintains a file of tissue blocks and slides.
• Prepares Histology and Cytology specimens paying special attention to positive identification of the specimen throughout the entire procedure.
• Assists in gathering and compiling Q.I. Statistics.
• Keeps inventory of supplies current.

Requirements

• The ability to read, write and comprehend instructions at a level generally acquired through a high school education plus some technical training acquired in one year of college or technical school.
• Must acquire adequate knowledge and skills through on-the-job training over a period of six months to perform at an acceptable level as a Histology Assistant.
• Some analytical ability required in situations where problems are not defined.
• Must possess inter-personal skills sufficient to provide or receive information from physicians, nursing personnel, and other laboratory personnel.
• Knowledge, skill and ability to provide care for a neo-natal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patient population.
• LMH is accredited by DNV and TJC, and as such, may require specific annual education related to specialty certifications and standards.
