Job description

The Department of Pediatrics in the University of Virginia's (UVA) School of Medicine is seeking candidates for Lab and Research Technician 1 or 2. The position involves conducting research studies and assisting with experiments in the Infectious Diseases Division in Prof. Steven Zeichner's laboratory.

About the Lab

The lab focuses on infectious disease pathogenesis, developing new therapies and diagnostics for infectious diseases and cancers. Current projects include creating platform technologies for rapid vaccine development, producing concept vaccines for viral diseases like HIV and COVID-19, and developing prophylactic and therapeutic cancer vaccines.

Department Goals

The UVA Department of Pediatrics and UVA Children's Hospital aim to enhance child and family health through collaborative care, education, research, leadership, and community service.

Responsibilities
  1. Perform and assist with experiments involving recombinant DNA technology, immunology, molecular biology, and animal models.
  2. Handle small animals, conduct laboratory procedures, and manage data entry and lab maintenance.
  3. Analyze data, prepare solutions, work with animal models, and troubleshoot.
  4. Design experiments and synthetic DNAs.
  5. Manage lab supplies, maintain inventories, and interact with vendors.
  6. Analyze and organize work procedures, interpret results, and prepare reports.
  7. Ship and receive samples, prepare figures and tables, and perform basic statistical analyses.
  8. Engage with scientific literature and interpret findings.
  9. Read and understand lab papers and grant proposals.
  10. Assist in training new lab members and visitors.
  11. Work with small laboratory animals and human samples, and handle pathogens under biosafety protocols.
  12. Complete biosafety and animal safety training.
  13. Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Lab and Research Technician 1
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • At least 1 year of lab experience or a Bachelor's degree in lieu of experience.
Lab and Research Technician 2
  • Associate's degree.
  • At least 2 years of lab experience or a Bachelor's degree in related science in lieu of experience.
Additional Information

This is a restricted, non-exempt, benefited position dependent on project needs and funding. The position is located in Charlottesville, VA, and involves standing, squatting, and fine motor tasks.
