Job description

Kitchen Support Technician
Part-Time | Evenings (including weekends)
Hours may vary based on operational needs, special events, staffing, or organizational priorities.

St. Vincent de Paul of Baton Rouge is seeking a dependable, hardworking, and service-minded Kitchen Support Technician to support our evening kitchen and dinner meal operations. In this hands-on role, you will help make sure every neighbor we serve receives a complete, welcoming meal, stepping in when volunteers are unavailable or when extra food preparation is needed.

Reporting to the Assistant Director of Food Services, the Kitchen Support Technician serves as a key evening support person. You will handle dishwashing and kitchen sanitation, support dinner service, assist with meal preparation, and help volunteers understand the evening workflow. You will work closely with kitchen staff, volunteers, Guest Advocates, and other team members to keep the kitchen and dining room clean, organized, safe, and hospitable, and to carry out the mission of St. Vincent de Paul with dignity, care, and respect.

What You'll Do
  • Serve as a primary evening support person for dinner meal operations.
  • Assist volunteers with meal preparation and service, and step in when scheduled volunteers don’t arrive or support is insufficient.
  • Prepare additional food as directed by Food Services leadership when more portions are needed, including sides, salads, or other appropriate items.
  • Help adjust meal quantities and use available food wisely to minimize shortages and waste.
  • Assist with serving line setup, replenishment, breakdown, and cleanup, and restock trays, utensils, beverages, and other service items.
  • Operate the commercial dishwasher safely, and wash, sanitize, and properly store dishes, cookware, utensils, and kitchen equipment.
  • Keep dishwashing, sink, and kitchen work areas clean, organized, and sanitary throughout meal service.
  • Properly handle trash, recycling, and food waste, and follow food safety, sanitation, and chemical-handling procedures.
  • Welcome and support evening Neighbors at the Table volunteers and Guest Advocates, helping them understand dinner workflow, assigned tasks, and basic food safety expectations.
  • Complete end-of-evening cleaning and closing duties so the kitchen is ready for the next day's operations.
  • Promptly report equipment problems, maintenance needs, supply shortages, unsafe conditions, or food safety concerns to Food Services leadership.
  • Help create a calm, welcoming, and respectful environment for neighbors, volunteers, and staff, consistent with the mission and Vincentian values of St. Vincent de Paul.
Who We're Looking For
  • Someone who is dependable, punctual, and takes pride in keeping a kitchen clean and running smoothly.
  • A service-minded team player who treats neighbors, volunteers, coworkers, and guests with dignity, patience, and respect.
  • A candidate with prior dishwashing, janitorial, warehouse, or food-service experience. This is preferred but not required; we’re happy to train the right person.
  • A person who holds a ServSafe Food Handler Certification, or is willing to obtain it after hire.
  • A person who can follow food safety, sanitation, and chemical-handling procedures.
  • Someone who stays calm and organized during busy meal periods and adapts to changing meal service needs.
  • A collaborative communicator who works well with staff, volunteers, and diverse populations.
  • A candidate who is able to stand and walk for extended periods; bend, stoop, and reach; lift and carry up to approximately 40 pounds; push and pull carts and racks; and work around hot equipment, water, cleaning chemicals, and wet floors.
  • Someone available to work evenings, with weekend work as needed based on meal service needs.
