Job description

Join Our Team and Make a Lasting Impact on Young Lives at Vogel!

Are you passionate about maintaining high standards of kitchen safety, sanitation, and food preparation while supporting a mission-driven organization? Vogel is seeking a dedicated Kitchen Assistant to join our Food and Farm Services team. In this essential role, you’ll assist with food prep, lead dishwashing duties, and help keep our kitchen clean, organized, and compliant—supporting the preparation of nutritious meals for the children and families we serve.

As a key member of our kitchen team, you’ll help deliver healthy, high-quality meals and contribute to our mission of nurturing children and strengthening families in our community.

This is a full-time, non-exempt position, with an hourly compensation ranging from $15.38 - $18.27.

What we do
Vogel is a well-established nonprofit organization located in Dallas with a history spanning over 36 years. Our core mission is centered around providing exceptional care and early childhood education for young children from homeless and domestic abuse shelters, all within our NAEYC accredited child care facility. Our innovative approach works to support both children and their parents through a two-generation strategy, offering resources that set families on a path toward a brighter future.

What you’ll do

  • Prepare food items according to standard recipes and portion guidelines
  • Deliver and retrieve food service carts between classrooms and the kitchen
  • Lead dishwashing efforts, ensuring dishes, utensils, and cookware are cleaned, sanitized, and stored properly
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized kitchen and dish station
  • Stock, rotate, and organize inventory and supplies
  • Safely operate and maintain kitchen tools and equipment
  • Assist with receiving and storing food and supply deliveries
  • Support compliance with USDA CACFP and local health regulations
  • Communicate with team members and follow directions from the Food Services Director
Additional Responsibilities
  • Participate in team training and ongoing professional development
  • Ensure compliance with kitchen safety and sanitation standards
  • Maintain cleanliness of all food prep, storage, and dishwashing areas
  • Support center-wide initiatives and perform other duties as assigned

What will make you successful in this role (skills)
  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Valid Food Handler Certificate or ability to obtain one
  • Valid driver's license required
  • At least 1 year of experience in a commercial or institutional kitchen
  • Knowledge of food safety and sanitation (Dallas County Health Department preferred)
  • Ability to lift 40 lbs. and perform physically demanding tasks (e.g., bending, standing, walking)
  • Strong communication, time management, and organizational skills
  • Compassion, patience, and professionalism in working with children and families affected by trauma
Why us?
Vogel is dedicated to providing top-notch early childhood programming for children aged 6 weeks to 5 years, as well as their families, who have been affected by the traumatic effects of homelessness. By joining our team, you can play a pivotal role in positively impacting these children's lives during their crucial formative years. Together, we have the power to change their lives forever.
