Job summary

Durham Academy is seeking a permanent full-time Kindergarten teacher to begin November 12, 2026. The Preschool serves approximately 100 students in grades Pre-K and Kindergarten. This position reports to the Preschool Director.

Responsibilities include setting learning goals, planning engaging lessons, preparing instructional materials, leading instruction, assessing student growth, maintaining family communication, and performing supervisory duties.

Qualifications

• A bachelor’s degree (preferably in education).
• At least three years of teaching experience in an early childhood classroom.
• Experience working with children in an educational environment.
• A demonstrated commitment to professional growth, collaboration and collegiality.
• A passion and love for meeting the social and academic needs of Preschool students.

Durham Academy is accepting applications for a permanent full-time Kindergarten teacher to begin November 12, 2026. The Preschool serves approximately 100 students in grades Pre-K and Kindergarten. Our Preschool classrooms have 18 students with a lead classroom teacher and a teaching assistant. This position reports to the Preschool Director.

Specific Responsibilities Include

• Setting learning goals and planning developmentally appropriate and engaging lessons
• Preparing instructional materials
• Leading whole and small group instruction and providing intervention, as needed
• Assessing student performance and growth
• Maintaining communication with families
• Carrying out required supervisory duties
• Performing other duties as requested by the division director

Minimum Requirements Include

• A bachelor’s degree (preferably in education)

Durham Academy was founded in 1933 as the Calvert Method School. The founders, George Watts Hill and his wife Ann McCulloch Hill, established the school as a private, independent school to educate their children and others in Durham. The school's initial teaching philosophy (and its name) was based on the Calvert School in Baltimore, Maryland, which Ann McCulloch Hill attended as a child. In 1959, the school ended its affiliation with the Calvert School, changed its name to Durham Academy, and began an expansion that led to the first high school graduating class in 1975.
