Job Description

Position: Elementary Music Teacher

Reports to: Building Principal

Salary and benefits: Determined by the board.

Executive Summary: Develop in each student an appreciation of the art of music as a part of general culture; to teach techniques of vocal music expression, to discover and develop talents of student in the field of music, to develop skills in listening to and reading music.

Major Areas of Responsibility
  • Teach skills in harmony, exploration in music and vocal music to students. Utilize standards and benchmarks.
  • Plan a balanced music program organizing class time so that preparation, rehearsal and instruction can be accomplished within the allotted time.
  • Utilize a repertoire of all types of music literature, including traditional contemporary that is appropriate for the ages and skill levels of the students.
  • Assist the administration in implementing all policies and/or rules governing student behavior and implementing the Capturing Kids Hearts program.
  • Control the storage and use of school owned property; making minor adjustments and request repairs to instruments as required.
  • Submit purchase order requests for music supplies, materials and equipment to the superintendent’s office keeping within the budgeted amount. Any invoices are to be returned to the Superintendent’s office in a timely manner.
  • Submit an updated equipment inventory at the end of each school year.
  • Establish and maintain standards of student behavior to provide and orderly, productive environment during practice, group rehearsals and music performances.
  • Evaluate each student’s musical growth and performance. Assessing each student’s contribution to the performance of the group. Prepare Progress reports for each student.
  • Identify student needs, and cooperate with other professional staff members in assessing and helping students solve health, attitude and learning problems.
  • Cooperate with school administration and other teachers in providing musical programs for school concerts, assemblies and civic functions.
  • Supervise students in out of school activities when assigned.
  • Participate in curriculum studies and other staff development programs.
  • Schedule vocal music activities; clearing dates and times with building principal.
  • Inform students, parents, and school patrons of date and times of performances.
  • Notify building principals when practice sessions will be conducted before and after school hours.
  • Make arrangements with Transportation Director when an activity requires a bus or other vehicle for an activity.
  • Notify appropriate person of any cancellation or postponement of any performance.
Work Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands: walking, standing, sitting, lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling; rarely lifting items above twenty-five pounds. Physical actions may include climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, bending at the waist, and reaching to retrieve teaching materials. The job requires regular walking, talking, and standing and potentially sitting. The job is performed regularly indoors with occasional exposure to seasonal temperatures and natural elements; subject to moderate to loud student, campus and environment noise; subject to frequent interruptions and contact with employees and students; regular use of computer keyboard, mouse and other basic technological devices. This position is not eligible for remote work.
