Sunnyside Community Services, Inc. is seeking an After-School Literacy Instructor for P.S. 199Q in Sunnyside, Queens. This part-time role supports Grades K-5 through literacy instruction, with afternoon classes and a focus on engaging activities and age-appropriate curriculum.

The role reports to the Program Director and collaborates with other staff to ensure a successful parent showcase and student progress across units. Training and growth opportunities are provided.

Qualifications

• Must be 18+ years old.
• High school diploma or equivalent required; related education preferred.
• Minimum 2 years of experience with children; after-school experience preferred.
• Background checks with DOE/DOH fingerprints and medical form required before hiring.
• Two professional references and one personal reference letter mandatory.
• Ability to work 13 school holidays throughout the year.
• Position runs Sept 2026 – Jun 2027; OCFS training available at no cost.

Responsibilities

• Teach literacy to 1–2 classes daily (45–55 minutes per class).
• Develop age-appropriate lesson plans; tailor curriculum by level.
• Prepare materials and examples for activities.
• Help create a parent showcase for each unit; collaborate with instructors.
• Meet supervisor regularly to discuss best practices and challenges.
• Maintain space cleanliness and organize supplies.
