Job summary

Sunnyside Community Services, Inc. is seeking a Part-time Gym Instructor at P.S. 199Q in Sunnyside, Queens. You will teach two daily gym classes (50–55 minutes each) and develop engaging, inclusive lessons for students in grades K–5, ages 5–12.

The role reports to the Program Director within Youth and Family Services, running September 2026 through June 2027, 17.5 hours per week, 2–5:30 pm, with compensation of $20–$25 per hour. On-site and online training are provided.

Qualifications

• Must be 18 years old or older.
• Two years of experience working with children required; after-school environment preferred.
• Fingerprints and background checks from the Department of Education and Department of Health must be finalized.
• Two professional reference letters and one personal reference letter are mandatory.
• Must be able to work 13 school holidays throughout the year.
• Position runs September 2026 – June 2027.

• Maintain a clean, safe gym space and store equipment properly.

The Gym Instructor will report directly to the Program Director and work alongside another staff member to ensure the safety and well-being of children ages 5–12. The Instructor will develop and lead age-appropriate physical education lessons and recreational activities that promote teamwork, sportsmanship, healthy habits, and physical fitness. Lessons will be adapted for different grade levels and abilities while creating an inclusive, engaging, and positive environment for students in grades K–5.

This position is part of the Youth and Family Services division at Sunnyside Community Services, which includes a pre-kindergarten program, elementary and middle school after-school programs, high school job readiness and career readiness programs, enrichment programming, and Adult and Immigrant Services.

Responsibilities

• Teach two gym classes daily, with each class lasting 50–55 minutes.
• Develop and submit engaging, age-appropriate lesson plans on time.
• Adapt activities to meet the needs and abilities of different grade levels.
• Prepare equipment and materials in advance to ensure safe and successful activities.
• Plan and lead opportunities for students to demonstrate the skills they’ve learned through games, challenges, or showcases.
• Collaborate with Instructors and Group Leaders to reinforce program goals and create a positive experience for students.
• Meet regularly with the supervisor to share successes, discuss challenges, and receive feedback.
• Maintain a clean, safe, and organized gym space, and ensure all equipment is properly stored and in good condition.

Qualifications

• Must be 18 years old or older. High School diploma or equivalent required; college or relevant degree preferred.
• A minimum of two years of experience working with children isrequired, experience working in an after-school environment ispreferred.
• Before hiring, fingerprints and background checks from the Department of Education and Department of Health must be finalized, along with a completed medical form.

Status: Part-time (17.5 hours per week)

Reports to: Program Director

Compensation: $20 – $25 per hour

Schedule: 2 – 5:30 pm, Monday through Friday (September 2026 – June 2027)

Location: P.S. 199Q in Sunnyside, Queens (Elementary School – Grades K-5)
