Job summary

Sunnyside Community Services is seeking a part-time literacy instructor for the PS 199Q Sunnyside, Queens program. You will teach 1–2 literacy classes daily, develop and tailor lesson plans, and prepare materials for activities, aiming to showcase student progress to parents.

The role requires engaging with children, collaborating with staff, and maintaining a clean, well-organized space while supporting a 2–5:30 schedule each weekday during the Sep 2026–Jun 2027 period.

Qualifications

• Must be 18 years old or older and have a high school diploma or equivalent.
• Minimum of two years of experience working with children; after-school experience preferred.
• Background checks with the Department of Education and Department of Health and a medical form must be completed before hiring.
• Two professional reference letters and one personal reference letter are mandatory.
• Must be able to work 13 school holidays throughout the year.
• Position runs through September 2026 – June 2027.

• Be the main support in putting together a showcase for the parents at the end of each of the 3 units.
• Collaborate with other instructors, as well as group leaders, to make sure everyone is working towards a common goal for the parent showcase.
• Meet regularly with the supervisor to share best practices and address challenges.
• Maintain the cleanliness of the program space and ensure program supplies are well organized and in good condition.

Qualifications

• Must be 18 years old or older. high school diploma or equivalent required, some college or relevant degree in education or related field preferred.
• A minimum of two years of experience working with children is required, experience working in an after‑school environment is preferred.
• Before hiring, fingerprints and background checks from the Department of Education and Department of Health must be finalized, along with a completed medical form.
• Prior to employment, two professional reference letters and one personal reference letter are mandatory.
• Must be able to work 13 school holidays throughout the year.
• This position runs through September 2026 – June 2027

Compensation: $20.00-$25.00 per hour (17.5 hours per week)

Schedule: 2 – 5:30 pm, Monday through Friday (September 2026 – June 2027)

Location: P.S. 199Q in Sunnyside, Queens (Elementary School – Grades K-5)
