Job summary

Westover School seeks a student-centered Junior Varsity Volleyball Coach for the Fall 2026 season. The ideal candidate will guide players in fundamentals, teamwork and game sense while mentoring student-athletes in a supportive environment.

Prior coaching is welcomed but not required; playing or strong volleyball knowledge is valued. Practices occur weekday afternoons with Wednesday/Saturday games and occasional contests.

Qualifications

  • Solid understanding of volleyball fundamentals, rules and game strategy.
  • Playing experience preferred.
  • Coaching experience is a plus but not required.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and build positive relationships with student-athletes.
  • Reliable, organized and able to provide supervision and leadership.
  • Interest in working with adolescents in an educational environment.
  • Current First Aid/CPR/AED certification or willingness to obtain before season.
  • Successful completion of required background checks.
  • Connecticut driver's license with a Public Passenger endorsement preferred or willingness to obtain.
  • Commitment to an inclusive, student-centered community.

Responsibilities

  • Help student-athletes develop volleyball fundamentals, game awareness, teamwork and sportsmanship.
  • Create practices that are engaging, organized and appropriate for the team's skill level.
  • Foster a positive, inclusive and supportive environment for learning, competition and confidence.
  • Travel with and supervise the team at away competitions.
  • Collaborate with the Varsity Volleyball Coach and Director of Athletics to support the volleyball program.
  • Maintain health, safety and supervision standards for student-athletes.
  • Communicate effectively with students, families and Athletics Department members.
  • Follow the Westover School Coaching Handbook policies.
  • Serve as a positive role model and represent the School professionally.

Job Summary

Westover School seeks an enthusiastic and student-centered Junior Varsity Volleyball Coach for the Fall 2026 athletic season. We are looking for someone with a solid understanding of volleyball who enjoys working with students and can help players build their skills, confidence, teamwork, and understanding of the game.

Prior coaching experience is welcomed but not required. Candidates with playing experience or a strong knowledge of volleyball who are interested in coaching and mentoring student-athletes are encouraged to apply.

Practices are held on weekday afternoons, with competitions generally scheduled on Wednesdays and Saturdays, along with occasional additional contests. The JV Coach works closely with the Varsity Volleyball Coach and Athletics Department to create a positive and rewarding experience for student-athletes.

  • Lead and supervise junior varsity volleyball practices, games, and team activities.
  • Help student-athletes develop volleyball fundamentals, game awareness, teamwork, and sportsmanship.
  • Create practices that are engaging, organized, and appropriate for the skill level of the team.
  • Foster a positive, inclusive, and supportive environment where students can learn, compete, and build confidence.
  • Travel with and supervise the team at away competitions.
  • Work collaboratively with the Varsity Volleyball Coach and Director of Athletics to support the overall volleyball program.
  • Maintain appropriate health, safety, and supervision standards for student-athletes.
  • Communicate effectively with students, families, and members of the Athletics Department.
  • Follow expectations and policies outlined in the Westover School Coaching Handbook.
  • Serve as a positive role model for Westover students and represent the School with professionalism and good judgment.
Required Qualifications &Skills
  • Solid understanding of volleyball fundamentals, rules, and game strategy.
  • Playing experience or other demonstrated familiarity with volleyball preferred.
  • Previous coaching experience is a plus, but not required.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and build positive relationships with student-athletes.
  • Reliable, organized, and able to provide appropriate supervision and leadership.
  • Interest in working with adolescents in an educational environment.
  • Current First Aid/CPR/AED certification or willingness to obtain prior to the season.
  • Successful completion of all required state and federal background checks.
  • Valid Connecticut driver's license with a Public Passenger ("A") endorsement preferred, or willingness to obtain if required.
  • Commitment to supporting an inclusive, respectful, and student-centered community.
Working Conditions

Work is performed primarily in a gymnasium and other athletic facilities, with occasional outdoor activities as required.Requires availability during weekday afternoons and evenings, as well as Saturdays throughout the fall athletic season.Regular travel to away contests using school-provided transportation.Frequent interaction with students, families, faculty, staff, officials, and visiting teams in a dynamic educational environment.Schedule is determined by the athletic calendar and may include occasional schedule changes due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances.

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to actively coach practices and games, including demonstrating skills and standing for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and move volleyball equipment weighing up to 30 pounds.
  • Ability to travel with the team to away contests.
