City of Indianapolis and Marion County seeks an attorney to provide effective representation for indigent juveniles charged as the juvenile equivalent of Level 6 offenses. The role requires a Juris Doctorate and Indiana licensure, with at least one year in criminal or juvenile litigation.

Independence and initiative are essential as responsibilities include court appearances, case review, witness interviews, and coordination with experts.

Qualifications

• Juris Doctorate and license to practice law required.
• One year of experience in criminal or juvenile litigation.
• If prior experience is only in a criminal matter, must also have completed 6 hours of juvenile delinquency practice training approved by the Indiana Commission on Court Appointed Attorneys.
• Strong verbal, written, communication and presentation skills; top level interpersonal and facilitation skills.
• Computer knowledge is a must; valid driver’s license required.

Responsibilities

• Primarily assigned to represent clients charged with the juvenile equivalent of a Level 6 felony offense (adult equivalent).
• Appears in court to provide effective representation of indigent clients in juvenile courts.
• Conducts legal/factual review; evaluates evidence; engages in pretrial motion practice; takes and defends depositions.
• Consults with clients, interviews witnesses, and consults with medical, forensic, DNA or other experts as needed to effectively represent clients.
• Negotiates case dispositions with opposing counsel, including plea agreements or litigating the case to court or jury.
• Communicates with clients via telephone, in-person interviews, and jail consultations.
• Reviews and updates court files; keeps clients and families updated on progress.
• Delegates assignments to paralegal II and investigators as appropriate.
• Collaborates with social workers on multidisciplinary strategies to achieve client objectives.
• Maintains confidentiality at all times.
• Duties may be expanded as needed by management.
