Job summary

Fehr & Peers in California seeks a Transportation Design Engineer to develop engineering PS&E for multimodal transportation projects, including complete streets, ITS, and pedestrian/bicycle infrastructure. You will work under the guidance of licensed engineers, gaining experience across planning, scoping, design, and construction support.

The role emphasizes strong technical writing and public speaking, with exposure to AutoCAD, MicroStation, Synchro/SimTraffic, Bluebeam, AGi32, and ProjectWise.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's or master's degree in transportation, civil engineering, or a related field.
• Engineer-In-Training (EIT) Certification or the ability to obtain within 12 months
• Work experience and/or completion of significant project coursework in traffic engineering design or related transportation design experience
• Exceptional technical writing and public speaking skills
• Work experience and/or coursework with software such as AutoCAD and/or Microstation (highly desirable)
• Openness to exploring and responsibly using new technologies and tools, while maintaining critical thinking and professional judgment

Responsibilities

• Provide support for planning and feasibility activities by developing concept designs and planning level cost estimates
• Develop and analyze design alternatives for traffic engineering projects
• Conduct field visits to review existing conditions and design constraints
• Prepare design plans, specifications, and construction cost estimates
• Provide design support during construction (requests for information, contractor submittals, etc.)
• Effectively communicate engineering concepts in memos, reports, and project meetings
• Collaborate with a diverse set of professionals including planners, engineers, technicians, analysists, and data scientists
• Work under the guidance of professional engineers to gain experience that counts towards state licensing requirement for the P.E. exam
• Embrace opportunities to learn and adopt new tools, technologies, and ways of working that enhance day-to-day work, while maintaining professional judgment, critical thinking, and accountability for results
