Job description

Junior Technologist (Polysomnographic Technician)

SUMMARY: The Junior Technologist prepares and administers polysomnographic studies, including NPSG, MSLT, MWT, and EEG under the direct supervision of the Chief Technologist, Team Leader, and/or Senior Technologists.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:
Immediate Supervisor:Chief Technologist
Interrelationships: SDI employees, patients, research subjects

REQUIRED EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

The Junior Technologist position requires at least a B.A. or B.S. in a science-related field (e.g. biology, chemistry, psychology), and at least three months of experience in the laboratory at the Sleep Disorders Institute at the level of Junior Technologist. Competency in all sleep study-related skills must be exhibited and documented prior to assuming this position. Certification in basic cardiopulmonary life support is required, and periodic recertification is mandatory.

The Junior Technologist will work towards getting registered as RPSGT and acquiring their NY state license. The junior technologist will keep HR informed of the progress.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The following description covers the most significant duties performed but does not exclude other work assignments.

  • Performs digital and analog NPSG, MSLT, and other laboratory tests without supervision, attending to all aspects of laboratory and patient preparation, data acquisition, and data archiving. Obtains video and audio recordings of patients that meet laboratory standards. Performs specialized procedures, including CPAP/BiPAP titration and O 2 administration, as indicated by physician’s orders.
  • Reviews the patient’s chart/montage card prior to the sleep study and determine the appropriate study procedure. Ensures that proper forms are completed by the patient and entered into the patient’s medical record (e.g. consent forms, pre/post sleep questionnaires). Enters appropriate technical notes and other documentation in the medical record.
  • Prepares the patient prior to the beginning of the sleep study making accommodations that are appropriate to the physical and mental status of the patient. Prepares patient for polysomnographic recording by placing appropriate sensors and confirming signal integrity.
  • Maintains, calibrates, and operates recording equipment for sleep studies without supervision. Interacts with equipment and patient to obtain accurate data. Monitors the patient’s behavior and status throughout the study, attending to the patient’s needs and making accommodations as necessary. Notifies the supervisor if problems arise.
  • Acquires and fully develops skills that enable him/her to summarize polysomnographic data using traditional and computer-assisted methods, including sleep stage, respiratory, limb movement, cardiac and video data. Is capable of identifying some abnormalities and recognizing some pathology. Can differentiate most artifacts from actual physiological data.
  • Performs other technical duties as required and accepts assignments from his/her supervisor and/or the Senior Technologist.
