Job summary

Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust is seeking a seconded Band 6 Junior Sister/Charge Nurse to join the Surgical Assessment Unit (SAU) at St James’s University Hospital. The role supports urgent surgical/gastroenterology and urology assessments, offering leadership and management experience for a Band 5 RN looking to advance.

You will work under the Band 7 Senior Sister, contribute to patient safety and service improvement, and rotate through SAU and ASC across demanding environments.

Why you should join our Team

SAU is a fast-paced acute assessment area caring for acute admissions within the General Surgical, Urology, Colorectal and Gastroenterology specialties. We assess patients who are referred by Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust Emergency Departments (ED) and via Primary Care Access Line (PCAL) in which patients are referred by Leeds GP surgeries. In addition to SAU, you will also work on the Ambulatory Surgical Centre (ASC) where patients are seen directly by a consultant following a referral from the GP or ED. SAU and ASC are both dynamic, high-pressure environments and are constantly striving for excellency and a high standard of patient care. If you are an individual who is keen to progress and develop through contributing new ideas for service improvement and helping to lead a hard-working team, then this is an ideal role for you.

What You Will Bring To The Role

You will have excellent communication and leadership skills, and the ability to demonstrate recent change management and implementation. You will be supporting the Band 7 Senior Sister to lead the team working on SAU and help to promote a positive, safe working environment that provides the best care possible for the patients. You will help to lead on aspects of patient safety, supporting staff and lots of improvement work that is currently underway on SAU. Previous experience at Band 6 would be an advantage, but it is also an opportunity for a Band 5 to further develop your career and leadership skills. You must demonstrate effective organisational skills and an ability to remain calm under pressure, with a positive attitude, acting as a positive role model. Effective service delivery requires staff to be flexible and be able to work full rotating shift patterns. Candidates should have current NMC registration and extensive experience at Band 5. Management experience is desirable but not essential.
