Job summary

Burns & McDonnell in Chicago, IL seeks an Assistant Instrument & Controls Engineer to support design teams on grassroots and revamp/refinery projects within the EPC process. You will help prepare instrument data sheets, I/O lists, and control system data sheets, while aligning with budget, schedule, and client requirements.

The role emphasizes collaboration with Process Engineering to develop P&IDs, perform sizing calculations, and manage supplier documentation.

Qualifications

Bachelor degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical engineering or related field.
ABET accreditation strongly preferred.
Previous internship or related experience preferred.
Proficient with AutoCAD, MicroStation; 2D/3D rendering tools.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
TWIC possession or ability to obtain.
EIT certification required.
Minimum 3.0 GPA strongly preferred.
Authorized to work permanently in the United States.

Responsibilities

Prepare instrumentation deliverables: Instrument Index, Data Sheets, Installation Details, Location Plans, Wiring and Loop Diagrams.
Prepare control system Data Sheets for DCS/PLC and CEMS.
Develop I&C purchase specs; review bids and vendor documentation.
Work with Process Engineering to develop P&ID's.
Perform process measurements and sizing calculations.
Collaborate with teams and manage third-party controls suppliers and FAT.
