Job summary

Burns & McDonnell in Phoenix, AZ is seeking an Assistant Instrumentation & Controls Engineer to support design teams on refining and chemical projects. You will help prepare instrument data sheets, wiring diagrams, DCS/PLC data sheets, and control narratives while coordinating with process engineering and vendors.

The role involves assisting with I&C purchase specs, FAT participation, and basic sizing calculations. Strong communication, teamwork, and a drive to learn are essential.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in a relevant field is required.
• ABET accreditation is preferred where possible.
• Internship or related experience is a plus.
• Strong communication and analytical skills are essential.
• Proficient with MS Office; AutoCAD and MicroStation a plus.
• TWIC credential or ability to obtain one.
• Engineers in Training certification required or pursued.
• Good academic standing (GPA 3.0+).

Responsibilities

• Assist in preparing instrument data sheets and wiring diagrams.
• Help develop DCS/PLC data sheets and control narratives.
• Support I/O lists, alarm rationalization, and FAT coordination.
• Assist with I&C purchase specifications and vendor reviews.
• Collaborate with Process Engineering on P&IDs.
• Perform basic sizing calculations for instruments and valves.
• Contribute to level sketches and control drawings.
• Support compliance with safety and project standards.
