Job summary

The City of Gilroy is seeking a part-time Assistant Fleet Technician in its Public Works Department – Fleet Division. You will help maintain city vehicles, heavy trucks, and equipment, working under the Senior Equipment Mechanic and Fleet & Facilities Superintendent.

This is an entry-level, hands-on role in municipal fleet maintenance within a public safety environment. Responsibilities include oil changes, tire work, battery replacement, inspections, and assisting with emergency lighting and

Qualifications

• Graduation from high school or GED equivalent.
• Completion of at least one semester or quarter course in Automotive or Equipment Mechanics.
• Work experience in the automotive repair/service field of at least 100 hours.
• Possess and maintain a valid California Driver License and a safe driving record to operate assigned vehicle(s).
• Possess and maintain a personal collection of basic tools.
• Work varied shifts and/or days assigned.
• Pass an employment background check and a post-offer medical examination including drug test.
• Prefer non-tobacco user.

Responsibilities

• Perform oil and filter changes and rotate/replace tires.
• Replace batteries and support inspections and further repairs.
• Assist with maintenance of emergency lighting and siren systems and related electrical components.
• Support computer hardware and other specialized equipment used in public safety and fleet operations.
• Gain exposure to mechanical and electronic systems integral to maintaining safe municipal fleet.
