Job summary

Stewart Iron Works is seeking an Estimator I to support the estimating team by producing accurate quantity takeoffs, material and labor pricing, and bid preparation. You will help move opportunities from plans to production while learning Division 5 Metals and fabrication processes.

You’ll work with experienced estimators and project teams to understand project scopes, develop estimates, and coordinate with suppliers and internal teams.

Qualifications

  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Building Construction, Drafting Technology, or a related field; equivalent relevant experience may also be considered.
  • 0–3 years of construction estimating, metal fabrication, construction management, drafting, or related experience. Relevant internship or co-op experience welcomed.
  • Ability to read and interpret architectural drawings, structural drawings, specifications, and other construction documents.
  • Strong mathematical and analytical skills with an emphasis on accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
  • Ability and willingness to learn estimating, takeoff, and construction software.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills.
  • A collaborative mindset and willingness to ask questions, learn from experienced team members, and take ownership of assigned work.

Responsibilities

  • Review architectural and structural drawings, specifications, addenda, and other project documents to identify the scope of metalwork.
  • Perform quantity takeoffs for materials, labor, equipment, and other project requirements.
  • Assist in developing estimates for fabricated and installed metalwork, including carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum, architectural bronze, and related materials.
  • Gather and organize pricing from suppliers, vendors, subcontractors, and internal resources.
  • Assist with evaluating material pricing, labor requirements, fabrication considerations, installation requirements, and project lead times.
  • Work with senior estimators to develop detailed scopes of work, cost analyses, and competitive bid proposals.
  • Review vendor and subcontractor quotations for scope coverage, accuracy, and alignment with project requirements.
  • Identify discrepancies, missing information, and potential scope gaps within drawings and specifications and work with the estimating team to resolve questions.
  • Coordinate with project management, fabrication, and other internal teams to understand how estimating assumptions affect production and field installation.
  • Maintain organized estimate files, bid documentation, supplier information, and historical cost data.
  • Assist with pricing design changes, additional work, and other scope revisions as needed.
  • Develop an understanding of metal fabrication processes, constructability, installation methods, and the factors that influence project cost.
  • Help maintain accurate and confidential estimating and costing information.
  • Participate in bid reviews, project handoffs, and other meetings as needed.
  • Continuously improve estimating knowledge, processes, and tools while maintaining Stewart Iron Works standards for accuracy and quality.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
