Job summary

Stewart Iron Works in Erlanger, KY is seeking an Estimator I to support the estimating team by developing accurate, competitive estimates for metal fabrication and installation projects.

You'll learn Division 5 Metals, from drawings to estimates through fabrication and field installation, working with seasoned estimators to build scopes, cost analyses, and bid proposals while maintaining organized files and data.

Qualifications

• Associate or bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Building Construction, Drafting Technology, or related field; equivalent experience considered.
• 0–3 years of construction estimating, metal fabrication, construction management, drafting, or related experience.
• Ability to read and interpret architectural drawings, structural drawings, specifications, and other construction documents.
• Strong mathematical and analytical skills with an emphasis on accuracy and attention to detail.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel; willingness to learn estimating software.

Responsibilities

• Review architectural and structural drawings, specifications, addenda, and other project documents to identify the scope of metalwork.
• Perform quantity takeoffs for materials, labor, equipment, and other project requirements.
• Assist in developing estimates for fabricated and installed metalwork, including carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum, architectural bronze, and related materials.
• Gather and organize pricing from suppliers, vendors, subcontractors, and internal resources.
• Assist with evaluating material pricing, labor requirements, fabrication considerations, installation requirements, and project lead times.
• Work with senior estimators to develop detailed scopes of work, cost analyses, and competitive bid proposals.
• Review vendor and subcontractor quotations for scope coverage, accuracy, and alignment with project requirements.
• Identify discrepancies, missing information, and potential scope gaps within drawings and specifications and work with the estimating team to resolve questions.
• Coordinate with project management, fabrication, and other internal teams to understand how estimating assumptions affect production and field installation.
• Maintain organized estimate files, bid documentation, supplier information, and historical cost data.
• Assist with pricing design changes, additional work, and other scope revisions as needed.
• Develop an understanding of metal fabrication processes, constructability, installation methods, and the factors that influence project cost.
• Help maintain accurate and confidential estimating and costing information.
• Participate in bid reviews, project handoffs, and other meetings as needed.
• Continuously improve estimating knowledge, processes, and tools while maintaining Stewart Iron Works standards for accuracy and quality.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

What You’ll Build

As an Estimator I, you’ll work alongside experienced estimators and project teams to develop accurate, competitive estimates for metal fabrication and installation projects.

You’ll build your understanding of Division 5 Metals while learning how a project moves from drawings and specifications through estimating, fabrication, and field installation.

Qualifications

What You Bring

• Associate or bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Building Construction, Drafting Technology, or a related field; equivalent relevant experience may also be considered.
• 0–3 years of construction estimating, metal fabrication, construction management, drafting, or related experience. Relevant internship or co-op experience is welcomed.
• Ability to read and interpret architectural drawings, structural drawings, specifications, and other construction documents.
• Strong mathematical and analytical skills with an emphasis on accuracy and attention to detail.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
• Ability and willingness to learn estimating, takeoff, and construction software.
• Strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
• Clear written and verbal communication skills.
• A collaborative mindset and willingness to ask questions, learn from experienced team members, and take ownership of assigned work.

Preferred, But Not Required

• Familiarity with Division 5 Metals and commercial construction.
• Previous exposure to metal fabrication or installation.
• Familiarity with carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum, architectural bronze, or similar materials.
• Experience performing material or quantity takeoffs.Familiarity with estimating or digital takeoff software.
• Experience with AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Bluebeam, or similar construction and design software.
• Basic understanding of fabrication processes, labor productivity, material pricing, and construction terminology.
• Knowledge of building codes, industry standards, and requirements relevant to miscellaneous and architectural metals.
• Experience working with general contractors, suppliers, subcontractors, architects, engineers, or fabrication teams.
