Job summary

The City of Boston is seeking a semiskilled maintenance worker to perform a variety of ordinary tasks in buildings and grounds under supervision. Duties include cleaning interiors and exteriors, minor repairs, painting, landscaping, and snow removal.

Requirements include knowledge of cleaning methods, good physical condition, ability to follow instructions, and a Boston residency prerequisite. The position may be assigned to any BPD location and requires criminal record checks and pre-employment

Qualifications

• Knowledge of cleaning methods and materials.
• Must be in good physical condition.
• Ability to understand and follow simple oral instructions.
• Self-motivated and able to work independently.
• Good judgment and attention to detail required.
• Massachusetts driver's license preferred.

This is a provisional appointment. Under supervision, performs a variety of ordinary maintenance tasks of a semiskilled nature to buildings and grounds.

Responsibilities

• Performs window cleaning, interior and exterior.
• Cleans walls and lavatories.
• Moves furniture; sweeps and mops floors.
• May make adjustments and repairs to toilets, sinks, and drinking fountain mechanisms.
• May change bulbs.
• May paint and perform minor carpentry work.
• Cuts grass and trims bushes; strips, washes, and waxes floors.
• Performs all cleaning duties involved with buildings and grounds, shovels snow.
• Uses floor buffers, lawn mowers, weed whackers, snow blowers, and plow equipment that do not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
• Picks up refuse around grounds and performs related work as required.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications

• Applicants must have knowledge of cleaning methods and materials.
• Must be in good physical condition.
• Must be able to understand and follow simple oral instructions.
• Must be self-motivated.
• Must have the ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.
• Massachusetts driver's license preferred.
