Job summary

Maryland Judiciary is seeking a Judiciary Clerk in the Traffic division at Baltimore County District Court in Towson, MD. The role focuses on processing traffic and criminal work, assisting the public and legal professionals, and maintaining accurate records using Odyssey and File and Serve.

The position requires a high school diploma or GED, with 1 year of related work experience; a Bachelor's degree or Paralegal certificate may substitute experience.

Essential Job Functions

This position is responsible for specialized clerical work at the beginning levels in the traffic section for the Baltimore County District Court. It requires that all essential duties assigned be performed in an accurate and prompt manner. The position received moderate supervision after the initial training period and orientation. While this position will have specific and measured assigned duties the employee will be expected to perform.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities
  • Enters and process all criminal/traffic work received through File and Serve, over the counter.
  • Reviews and scan all paperwork in Odyssey after processing and scan files in from commissioners and for upcoming trial dates to be available for court. Sort, file, and scan various documents and files in accordance with MDEC procedures.
  • Assists the public, attorneys, police agencies, State's Attorney's, Public Defender's, court personnel by phone and/or in person with questions regarding cases.
  • Work criminal/traffic reports on a daily basis.
  • Enters in officer schedules in officer portal.
  • Customer service in person and on the phone to answer questions and help resolve issues
  • And concerns.
  • Cross trains and assists in all areas and departments such as civil, rent, DV, criminal and traffic.
  • All other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
Education

High school diploma (or GED equivalent).

Experience

One (1) year of work experience, preferably in court operations or in the fields of criminal justice, parole and probation, legal or financial services.

A Bachelor?s Degree may substitute the required work experience.

A Paralegal/Associates Degree or 60 college credits may substitute the required work experience.

A Paralegal Certificate May Substitute The Required Work Experience
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge Of
  • General office practices, procedures, and equipment.
  • Standard legal forms and documents used in the Judiciary.
  • Basic English and arithmetic to include, but not limited to, spelling, punctuation, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
Skill In
  • Customer service and handling problems tactfully and patiently.
  • Typing on a personal computer.
  • Accuracy and attention to detail.
Ability To
  • Use standard office and business equipment including, but not limited to, personal computers, word processing, spreadsheets, database software, copier, microfilm machine, register, scanner, fax machine, etc.
  • Use and maintain alphabetical and numerical filing systems.
  • Communicate clearly, tactfully, and effectively with judges, the public, police agencies, attorneys, and other court officials and personnel, both verbally and in writing.
  • Understand and abide by departmental rules, regulations, and procedures.
  • Exercise tact, diplomacy, and impartiality in dealing with the public, law enforcement personnel, and attorneys.
  • Follow procedures, verbal and written instructions, and protocols for any given assignment.
  • Use proper grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
  • Exercise independent judgement in interpreting and applying appropriate policy, procedure, rule, law, and/or regulation to a situation.
  • V erify scanned documents from other co-workers
Physical Requirements

Light work. Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for sedentary work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for light work.
