Job summary

Ralph L Wadsworth is seeking a JR Estimator to join our team promptly. You will collaborate with Sr Estimator, Project Owners, Vendors, Subcontractors, Project Managers, Accounting, and the Chief Estimator to prepare detailed estimates for civil construction projects.

Qualifications include a Civil Engineering or Construction Management degree, multiple internships (heavy civil/road), and strong communication and presentation skills.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from four‑year college, technical school or university in Civil Engineering or Construction Management.
  • 1–2 internships in heavy civil, commercial building, or road construction.
  • 1–2 internships with sub‑contractors.
  • 1–2 college estimating courses or estimating internship.
  • Ability to demonstrate excellent communication to others outside the company; past similar work preferred.
  • Strong presentation skills.
  • Attention to detail and ability to ask follow-up questions to gather accurate information.
  • Knowledge of fractions, percentages, ratios, and geometric formulas for take‑offs.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw conclusions.

Responsibilities

  • Review proposal specifications and drawings; attend pre‑bid meetings to determine scope and contents of estimate.
  • Prepare estimates by calculating quantity take‑offs, material prices, labor costs per man‑hour, and equipment costs for the full scope.
  • Research historical data and compile reports to guide future estimates.
  • Incorporate historical data into unit and man‑hour figures.
  • Develop bid package estimate documents.
  • Maintain backup files with current supplier prices and data.
  • Review design options and recommend best solution based on cost and materials.
  • Follow awarded contracts; may estimate extra work, change orders, or procure materials.
  • Involved with takeoffs and project engineer responsibilities.

Position Description
  • Review proposal specifications and drawings and attend pre‑bid meetings to determine scope of work and required contents of estimate.
  • Prepare estimates by calculating various statistical data such as quantity take‑offs, material price lists, labor costs per man‑hour and equipment costs and applying to complete scope of work.
  • Review/research historical data (purchase orders, subcontracts, productivity analysis reports, etc.) and compile summary reports to develop guidelines and precedence for future estimates.
  • Incorporate historical data into unit and man‑hour figures.
  • Participate in developing bid package estimate documents.
  • Maintain files of working documents for back‑up to estimating figures including current (accurate) information on prices from suppliers through direct contact, sales brochures, price lists, etc.
  • May review design options and recommend best solution based on cost, engineering quality or availability of materials.
  • Follow awarded contracts as assigned – may include estimating extra work items, change orders, credits, procuring materials, etc.
  • Involved with takeoffs and project engineer responsibilities
Position Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree from four‑year college, technical school or university in Civil Engineering or Construction Management
  • 1–2 past internships in heavy civil, commercial building, or road construction
  • 1–2 past internships working with sub‑contractors
  • 1–2 college estimating courses and/or estimating internship
  • Ability to demonstrate excellent communications to individuals outside the company. Past similar work experience is preferred.
  • Strong presentation skills
  • Attention to details and asking following up questions multiple times to gather correct and timely information
  • Good knowledge of fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions for practical situations and to calculate mathematical extensions. Also, good knowledge of geometric formulas and equations are required to calculate area, volume, etc. in performing take‑offs.
  • Ability to demonstrate the ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
