Job summary

Washtenaw Community College seeks a skilled electrician to perform installations, maintenance, and repairs within the Facilities department. You will ensure code-compliant wiring, prepare drawings, and manage equipment inventories while upholding safety and quality standards.

The role requires a Michigan Journeyman license, 5–7 years’ experience, and the ability to work on campus with some travel between buildings. AI-enabled tools will support daily tasks and documentation.

Essential Duties include:
  • Perform new or modified installations to minimize waste of materials, provide access for future maintenance, and avoid unsightly, hazardous, and unreliable wiring consistent with specifications of state and local electrical codes.
  • Prepare sketches showing location of wiring and equipment, or follows diagrams or electrical drawings, ensuring that concealed wiring is installed before completion of future walls, ceilings, and flooring. Measures, cuts, bends, threads, assembles, and installs electrical conduit; and pulls wiring through conduit.
  • Prepare estimates for supplies and materials related to instructional equipment and devices and other departmental equipment purchases.
  • Develop and maintain preventative maintenance program for all electrical equipment and devices including transformers and switchgears.
  • Splice wires by stripping insulation from terminal leads, twisting or soldering wires together, and applying tape or terminal caps.
  • Connect wiring to lighting fixtures and power equipment.
  • Install control and distribution apparatus such as switches, relays, contactors, and circuit- breaker panels. Connects power cables to equipment, such as electric devices and motors, and installs grounding leads.
  • Test continuity of circuits to ensure electrical compatibility and safety of components with testing instruments such as ohmmeter and other testing equipment as needed.
  • Observe functioning of installed equipment or systems to detect hazards and need for adjustments, relocation, or replacement.
  • Repair and maintain faulty electrical equipment or systems. Responsible for the installation of new and replacement electrical equipment.
  • Provide complete electrical installations for minor construction and renovation projects.
  • Responsible for ordering and maintaining all electrical supplies and equipment.
  • Responsible for maintaining inventory of all electrical supplies and equipment.
  • Utilize artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled tools and software, to support job‑related functions and improve efficiency, accuracy, communication, documentation, planning, training, troubleshooting, reporting, work management, and other operational responsibilities, while maintaining confidentiality and compliance with institutional policies, procedures, and applicable regulations.
  • Regular attendance on campus is required for this position.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Hours/Schedule:
  • This position will work 40 hours per week. Schedule dependent on college need, so must have the ability to accept temporary schedule changes with minimum notice.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Five (5) to seven (7) demonstrated years’ experience as a licensed journey person electrician.
  • Demonstrated writing and reading skills; including blueprint reading.
  • Minimal ability to use a micro-computer and knowledge of basic spreadsheets, databases, and word processing application software.
  • Ability to travel from building to building and floor to floor in multiple level buildings and concealed spaces.
  • Possess and maintain a valid Journey Person’s license pursuant to the Michigan Electrical Administration Act of 1956 as amended. Satisfactory completion of an approved electrician’s apprenticeship program such as the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, or approved equal.
  • Possess and maintain a valid Michigan Driver’s License.
  • Ability to work in inclement weather as needed.
  • Ability to distinguish colors within the visible light spectrum.
  • Ability to climb a ladder to a minimum height of 20 feet.
  • Ability to lift objects up to 60 pounds in weight, unassisted, to a height of at least three feet above floor level.
  • Demonstrated ability to use standard workplace technology and emerging AI-supported tools relevant to the position. Ability to evaluate AI-generated information for accuracy and appropriateness, maintain confidentiality of institutional information, and exercise sound judgment and ethical practices when using AI technologies in support of work‑related responsibilities.

  • May be required to operate a vehicle for approved College business. Must possess a valid driver’s license appropriate for the vehicle operated, meet the College’s Authorized Driver requirements, successfully complete a Motor Vehicle Record review, and comply with all College vehicle use and safety policies.
