Job summary

Washtenaw Community College in Ann Arbor, MI is seeking a Fleet Operator Technician in the Facilities department to maintain the college fleet, utility vehicles, and grounds equipment. You will perform inspections, diagnostics, repairs, parts procurement, and support for capital equipment planning.

Requires five years of related experience, a valid driver’s license, and ability to work with AI-enabled tools while upholding safety policies.

Qualifications

Position Description:

Position Summary:

Under the direct supervision of the Landscape and Grounds Manager, the Fleet Operator Technician is responsible for overall maintenance of the campus fleet, utility vehicles, and grounds equipment used to support college operations. Performs a variety of technical and maintenance functions, including but not limited to, operation of heavy equipment, ordering parts and materials, snow removal operations, digital software applications, and assisting with special projects in the division.

Essential Duties include:

• Perform inspections, preventative maintenance, and repairs on heavy and power equipment, such as tractors, lift trucks, loaders, mowers, small engines and other ground-related equipment.
• Perform inspections, preventative maintenance, and repairs on electric, hybrid, diesel, and gasoline powered fleet vehicles, UTV’s and related attachments.
• Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues in accordance with manufacturer guidelines, industry standards, and safety regulations.
• Complete reports, work orders, documentation, and perform other clerical duties as required daily.
• Procure parts and materials, coordinate equipment purchases, and maintain parts inventory for fleet vehicles, UTV’s, and grounds maintenance equipment.
• Operate heavy equipment owned and leased by the College, including wheel loaders, backhoe, forklift, snowplow, and dump truck with salt spreaders.
• Assist with fleet utilization data, cost/benefit analysis, and provide recommendations for future capital equipment expenditures.
• Provide technical expertise and assist with developing bid specifications for selection and purchase of new fleet vehicles and power equipment.
• Maintain up-to-date knowledge of industry advancements, technology, products, and equipment to support effective diagnostics and maintenance procedures.
• Utilize artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled tools and software, to support job-related functions and improve efficiency, accuracy, communication, documentation, planning, training, troubleshooting, reporting, work management, and other operational responsibilities, while maintaining confidentiality and compliance with institutional policies, procedures, and applicable regulations.
• Removes snow and ice from walkways, drives, paths, and parking lots by hand and with plow trucks, power brooms, snow blowers and heavy equipment.
• Instruct, demonstrate, and share knowledge with Facilities personnel on the proper operation, use, and general maintenance of vehicles and related power equipment.
• Weld, braze, and fabricate various kinds of metals.
• Identify and report unsafe conditions, damage, deterioration, or needed repairs to campus grounds or property.
• Wash vehicles, equipment, tools, and work areas to maintain cleanliness and shop safety.
• Perform other related duties as directed.
• Utilize artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled tools and software, to support job-related functions and improve efficiency, accuracy, communication, documentation, planning, training, troubleshooting, reporting, work management, and other operational responsibilities, while maintaining confidentiality and compliance with institutional policies, procedures, and applicable regulations.

Hours/Schedule:

• This position will work 40 hours per week. All shifts are posted up to twice a year for requested shift preference. Landscape and Grounds shifts begin the first pay period of April and again between November and December at the employer’s discretion. Winter shifts include a day shift and an afternoon shift. Schedule dependent on college need, and the union bargaining agreement.

Work Environment and Physical Demands:

• Ability to work while wearing multiple items of personal protective equipment ( PPE ), with potential to encounter dust, strong odors, exhaust fumes (gas/diesel), and spikes in noise levels.
• Ability to work outside in various types of weather, including inclement conditions for extended periods.
• Physically capable of walking over uneven surfaces, bending and kneeling for long stretches of time, climbing stairs and ladders, and lifting objects and materials from floor level to at least waist high.
• Ability to lift, pull, and use pushing motions, in repetition, with tools, materials, and landscape equipment from light to heavy weight.

Minimum Qualifications:

Minimum Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• High school diploma or GED equivalent.
• Equivalent of five (5) years recent, full-time paid, commercial work experience in fleet vehicle maintenance, mechanical repair, and power equipment maintenance.
• Thorough knowledge of automotive and equipment repair principles, practices, techniques, and materials.
• Thorough knowledge and demonstrated ability to safely and effectively operate heavy equipment, power equipment, and related attachments.
• Ability to utilize computer software programs such as All Data for electronic troubleshooting and diagnosis, digital work order software, and Microsoft Office components for email, proposals, and photo documentation.
• Ability to read, analyze, and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating, and maintenance instructions and procedural manuals.
• Demonstrated ability to climb ladders and lift 60 pounds three feet high.
• Possess and maintain a valid Chauffer’s Driver’s License.
• May be required to operate a vehicle for approved College business. Must possess a valid driver’s license appropriate for the vehicle operated, meet the College’s Authorized Driver requirements, successfully complete a Motor Vehicle Record review, and comply with all College vehicle use and safety policies.
• Ability to obtain and maintain Industrial Lift Truck and Aerial Lift certification.
• Possess and ability to maintain State of Michigan or ASE equivalent certifications for auto and heavy truck in:
