Job summary

Elko County School District in Elko, Nevada seeks a Journeyman HVAC/Plumber to install, repair and maintain plumbing and related systems in district facilities. Under general supervision, you will work on gas, water, drainage systems and boilers as required.

Responsibilities include reading blueprints, selecting materials, installing fixtures, testing systems, and ensuring compliance with codes. The position requires lifting, flexible hours, and coordination with agencies.

Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent.
Completion of apprenticeship or journeyman certification as a plumber; or documented experience.
Willingness to cross train and work in other building trades.
Experience working on boilers or willingness to be trained.

Responsibilities

Installs and repairs plumbing fixtures (water heaters, showers, hot water tanks, disposal units, dishwashers, water softeners, etc.).
Repairs and maintains plumbing by replacing washers, mending burst pipes and clearing clogs.
Repairs/replaces tubing, gas heating fixtures, furnaces, regulators and pumps.
Study building plans to determine material needs and installation sequence.
Inspect structures to identify obstructions and ensure structural safety.
Locate and mark pipe positions for walls and floors.
Cut and thread pipe using manual tools and torches.
Solder, braze and glue pipe fittings and materials.
Cut openings in walls/floors for pipes and fittings.
Test vessels and piping according to procedures.
Replace insulation on piping as needed.
Assemble and install valves, pipes of metals and nonmetals.
Coordinate with agencies regarding inspections and compliance.
Handle and dispose of hazardous materials.
Follow safety standards and perform other duties as assigned.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under general supervision assembles, installs and repairs according to specifications and plumbing codes, pipes, fittings and fixtures of; gas, water and room heating, water delivery and drainage systems.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Installs and repairs plumbing fixtures (i.e., water heaters, showers, hot water tanks, disposal units, ` dishwashers, water softeners and garbage can washers, etc.).

2. Repairs and maintains plumbing by replacing washers, mending burst pipes and opening clogged drains.

3. Repairs and/or replaces tubing, gas heating fixtures, furnaces, regulators, controls, pumps, etc.

4. Studies building plans and drawings to determine materials requirement and sequence of installations.

5. Inspects structures to ascertain obstructions to be avoided to prevent weakening of structure resulting from installation of pipe.

6. Locates and marks position of pipe and pipe connection passage holes for pipes in walls and floors.

7. Cuts and threads pipe using pipe cutters, cutting torch, and/or pipe-threading machine.

8. Solders, brazes and glues pipe, pipe fittings and related materials.

9. Cuts openings in walls and floors to accommodate pipe and pipe fittings.

10. Tests assembled vessels and piping using specified procedures.

11. Replaces and/or repairs insulating material on piping.

12. Assembles and installs valves, pipefittings, and pipes composed of metals, (i.e., iron, steel, brass, copper, etc.), and nonmetals (i.e., glass, vitrified clay, and plastic using hand tools and power tools).

13. Communicates and assists with other county, city and state agencies regarding inspection and compliance issues.

14. Responsible for the handling and disposal of hazardous materials.

15. Conforms to safety standards as prescribed.

16. Performs other tasks related to the position as assigned.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

1. High school graduation or other equivalent (i.e., GED, college, technical, or trade school transcript, foreign equivalency, etc.)

2. Completion of apprenticeship or journeyman certification as a plumber; or a minimum of documented experience.

3. Must be willing to cross train and work in other building trades.

4. Experience working on boilers or willing to be trained.

Licenses and Certificates

1. A valid driver’s license that allows the applicant/employee to legally operate a motor vehicle in Nevada. License must be maintained for the duration of the assignment.

2. Copy of current driving history issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles at time of application or Qualified Selection Pool (Q.S.P) placement and at time of interview prior to final selection.

3. Apprenticeship and/or journeyman certificate/card, if available.

4. State of Nevada Bureau of Safe Drinking Water-Water Distribution/Treatment Operators Certificate or the ability to obtain such within one year of employment.

5. Nevada State Fire Marshall C of R Types “G”, “GU”, and Backflow Prevention or the ability to obtain such within six (6) months of employment.

6. Certification as a Certified Back Flow Prevention Assembly Tester accepted by the State of Nevada or the ability to obtain such within six (6) months of employment.

EXAMPLES OF ASSIGNED WORK AREAS

Elko County School District facilities - offices, schools (classrooms, restrooms, kitchens, locker rooms, etc.), construction sites, open trenches, chase ways, existing buildings under renovations, etc.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Strength: Heavy - Exert force 50-100 lbs. occasionally, 25-50 lbs. frequently, or 10-20 lbs. constantly. May involve significant stand/walk/push/pull/carry.

Physical Demands: Frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, climbing, handling, repetitive fine motor activities and feeling. Occasional talking, hearing, and balancing. Vision: Frequent near and far acuity, depth perception, focal length change and color vision.

Environmental Conditions: Varies from a climate controlled office setting to work outdoors with temperatures ranging from mild/moderate to extreme cold/heat. Exposure to noise levels ranging from moderate to loud and occasional to frequent time periods.

Hazards: Furniture, playground/office equipment, communicable diseases, chemicals (as related to specific assignment), and power/hand operated equipment and machinery (as related to specific assignment).

Pipes, torches, pipe threading machines, pipe benders, jackhammers, hydraulic and air-powered tools and other tools related to the trade.
