Job Summary

The Assistant Foreman assists the foreman in ensuring that Plumbing, HVAC, DDC, and Kitchen Maintenance department employees and contracted services complete their assigned work on time and to a high standard of quality. The incumbent helps maintain safe working conditions and procedures at assigned worksites. The incumbent monitors the inventory of related parts and equipment and acquires additional inventory as appropriate. The incumbent supervises lead employees in the department, checks their performance, and provides guidance and support in the lead's oversight of employees and contractors as needed. The Assistant Foreman also ensures continuity in the Plumbing, HVAC, DDC, and Kitchen Maintenance department during the Foreman's absence.

Essential Functions
  • Assists in maintaining appropriate quantities of parts and equipment to minimize project delays.
  • Acquires parts, equipment, and tools from external vendors in compliance with the procurement policies of Granite School District.
  • Maintains knowledge of district procurement policies and procedures as changes are made.
  • Interprets blueprints.
  • Assists the foreman in making decisions regarding hiring, promotions, corrective discipline, retention, and disciplinary actions.
  • Provides continuity for the department in the foreman's absence.
  • Participates in training related to safety equipment and hazardous chemicals.
  • Maintains work orders, invoices, inventories, and other documentation as directed by the Foreman.
  • Oversees and participates in a preventive maintenance program as instructed.
  • Supervises and monitors the work of lead employees.
  • Assists lead employees in the supervision of journeymen and contractors.
  • Communicates and interacts with team members, supervisors, administrators, and teachers in both written and verbal forms.
  • Ensures that lead employees are maintaining cleanliness and safety standards in their assigned zones.
  • Develops preventive maintenance programs and procedures related to plumbing systems, HVAC systems, DDC systems, and kitchen equipment.
  • Provides planning and coordinating for plumbing, HVAC, and kitchen equipment projects from start to finish.
  • Ensures project adherence to timelines and safety standards.
  • Provides trade‑related input for Capital Outlay and Maintenance project planning and execution.
  • Assists in coordinating Maintenance and Capital Outlay projects under the Foreman's direction.
  • Ensures all maintenance activities comply with industry standards, safety regulations, and Granite School District policies and procedures, with special attention to procurement policies.
  • Maintains professional competence related to changing techniques and developments in relevant fields.

Required Knowledge And Skills
  • Well‑developed skills in supervising skilled employees.
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of relevant building and safety codes, including important aspects of OSHA, EPA, MSDS, IPC, IMC, and ADA.

  • Strong knowledge of the district Education Support Professionals (ESP) negotiated agreement and the Granite School Board policies that govern ESP employment.
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of the negotiated agreement between Granite School District and the Granite Education Support Professionals Association and the Granite School Board policies governing education support professional (ESP) employment.
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of the current district procurement policies.
  • Working knowledge of district time and attendance and maintenance work order procedures.
  • Ability to plan work and organize personnel, materials, and equipment for specific projects.
Required Education And Qualifications
  • Requires a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Requires one of the following:
    • a current, valid Utah Master Plumber license;
    • a current, valid Utah Journeyman Plumber license and willingness to obtain a master plumber license within one (1) year of hire;
    • a current, valid Utah Master Electrician license;
    • a current, valid Utah Journeyman Electrician license and willingness to obtain a master electrician license within (1) year of hire;
    • six (6) years of successful HVAC‑related job experience;
    • two (2) years of formal HVAC training and four (4) years of successful HVAC work experience.
  • Requires a current, valid driver's license.
Required Prior Experience
  • Requires a minimum of one (1) year of successful experience in a supervisory or leadership role, overseeing the work of other skilled workers.
  • Experience in a supervisory or leadership role in a construction or maintenance environment is preferred.
Assigned Decision Making
  • Empowered to ensure that each assignment has the necessary tools, materials, and supplies.
  • Assists with inventory ordering and management.
  • Determines repairs and replacements as needed.
  • Provides support in hiring, promotions, retention, and performance reviews upon request from the Foreman.
  • Prioritizes work for specific assigned jobs.
  • May determine that the use of specific equipment is a danger to the user and remove the equipment or neutralize it in place.
Non‑supervisory Interaction
  • Interacts and collaborates with administrators, teachers, colleagues, and patrons related to assigned projects.
Supervisory Responsibility
  • Oversees the entire staff under the direction of the Foreman.
  • Supervises, directs, and guides lead employees in their responsibilities.
  • Directly supervise multiple trades on special projects.
  • Monitors the progress of apprentices to ensure adherence to District apprenticeship and training standards.
  • Motivates and encourages subordinates to foster a positive and productive work environment.
  • Makes specific work assignments to lead employees and monitors their performance.
  • Coordinates with contract service vendors and material vendors on projects.
Working Environment
  • Occasionally requires work on assigned systems during odd hours to avoid inconveniencing normal school functions.
  • Works with electronic control systems, which may be live electric circuits.
  • Occasionally requires additional, irregular hours in response to district building emergencies as a supervisor, which may call for a large turnout of workers.
  • Requires some irregular hours as part of the rotating, after‑hours, on‑call program to respond to building emergencies independently.
  • May work in high locations and awkward positions; on ladders or inside man lifts such as Scissor, truck, and tractor‑mounted bucketed boom lifts.
  • May work in or around open trenches and excavating equipment.
  • May be subject to high voltage, heat, noise, dirt, chemicals, confined spaces, raw sewage and cold.
  • Occasional stress from emergencies and meeting project deadlines.
  • Interruptions may occur while performing work requiring accuracy and concentration.
