SUMMARY OF JOB PURPOSE

The Public Works Technician I is responsible for a variety of tasks in the operation and maintenance of water and sewer systems, building maintenance, vehicle maintenance, and other related activities for the Town of Jackpot. This position is required to be on-call and occasionally work weekends. Overnight and extended travel may be required. This position has been identified as safety-sensitive and is subject to pre-employment and random drug and alcohol screening pursuant to county policy.

Job Description

The Public Works Technician I is responsible for a variety of tasks in the operation and maintenance of water and sewer systems, building maintenance, vehicle maintenance, and other related activities for the Town of Jackpot. This position is required to be on-call and occasionally work weekends. Overnight and extended travel may be required. This position has been identified as safety-sensitive and is subject to pre-employment and random drug and alcohol screening pursuant to county policy.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Assists in the operation and maintenance of water and sewer systems.
  • Assists in the maintenance of all buildings and grounds in the unincorporated towns.
  • Maintains public utilities vehicles and equipment that are in the care of the department.
  • Performs basic data entry.
  • Maintains familiarity with and executes safe work procedures associated with assigned work.
  • Represents the department with dignity, integrity, and a spirit of cooperation.
Education and Experience
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES (KSA’s)

Knowledge:

  • Appropriate use and maintenance of hand and power tools and other equipment commonly used for basic laborer tasks.
  • Knowledge of plumbing, sewer and water system piping, operations and maintenance, and mechanical equipment.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety practices of the trade.
  • Basic carpentry practices and principles, including concrete forming and finishing.
  • Welding, both electric arc and gas mediums and basic electrical troubleshooting and maintenance techniques.
  • Basic asphalt care and maintenance.
  • Basic landfill operations.
  • Heavy equipment and 18-wheel truck operation.
  • Workingknowledge of computer programs.

Skills:

  • Performing basic troubleshooting techniques.
  • Identifying the appropriate tools and equipment needed for a task on relatively short notice.
  • Communicating effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Understanding and carrying out complex written and oral communications.
  • Managing time effectively.
  • Using the tools and equipment listed below.

Abilities:

  • Reading, comprehending and interpreting manuals, blueprints, drawings, maps, schematics and diagrams.
  • Safely perform basic troubleshooting techniques and electrical maintenance tasks.
  • Identify the appropriate tools and equipment needed for a task on relatively short notice.
  • Proficiently operate and maintain heavy equipment, such as a backhoe, excavator, skid steer and 18-wheel truck and trailer.
  • Ability to weld and use a cutting torch proficiently.
  • Safely monitor excavation sites and understand different types of soils and conditions encountered while excavating.
  • Managing multiple deadlines and competing demands successfully.
  • Developing and maintaining effective working relationships with subordinates, peers, supervisors, city, county, state and federal officials and the public as needed. Dealing with problems courteously and tactfully.
  • Identify hazardous situations and act accordingly to make safe decisions for everyone while performing duties.
  • Accomplishing organizational goals and working independently on assignments from beginning to end.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

Education: High School Diploma or equivalent

Experience: No experience required

Certifications
  • Must maintain a valid Nevada driver’s license and Nevada Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL-A) with an X endorsement preferred
  • Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) 30-hour card preferred
  • Water Distribution Operator I certification within one year of hire
  • ATSSA Traffic Control Technician and Traffic Flagger Certification within one year of hire
  • Wastewater treatment Grade 1 certification within 18 months of hire

  • This position has been identified as a safety-sensitive position and is subject to random drug screenings.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT

  • Work is performed inside and outdoors. The employee will be exposed to outside weather conditions in all seasons.
  • The employee will be exposed to dusty, wet, humid conditions and extreme hot and cold temperatures.
  • Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate computers and various pieces of office equipment.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to talk or hear, sit, use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects or controls, and reach with hands and arms.
  • The employee is required to stand or walk, sometimes for an extended period of time. The employee must be able to climb into confined spaces and work at heights of up to 50 feet, enter and exit a 30" manhole access while maneuvering with Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCUBA) gear to gain access into a 4' diameter manhole, maneuver through a 36" diameter access hatch the bottom of which is 36" above the level of the ground, and work on an 8" pipe in a 24" wide trench 30" deep or inside a 36" wide trench box.
  • The employee must frequently lift and move up to 50 pounds and infrequently lift and move up to 100 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee may work in conditions with poor lighting.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet in the office and moderate in the field.
  • Physical hazards from traffic and construction equipment may be present.
  • Tools and equipment used include a personal computer, printer, telephone, calculator, copy machine and other associated office equipment, cutting torch, backhoe/excavator, skid steer, hand tools, power tools, SCUBA gear and other equipment.
  • Incumbent will be asked to travel in a passenger vehicle and an 18-wheel truck and trailer possibly for extended periods of time
  • Ability to sit or stand at a computer for several hours at a time.
