Position: Job Cost Accountant

Position Overview
Our client is an established commercial general contractor in Phoenix's East Valley, specializing in tenant improvement and ground-up construction across commercial, industrial, retail, and office markets. Under new ownership and in growth mode, with revenue projected to double over the next two years, the company is rebuilding its accounting team under a new controller. This position owns the full project life cycle for all general contracting jobs, from setup through closeout, and reports directly to the controller.
Responsibilities
- Set up new jobs in Sage 300 CRE, including job cost structures, budgets, and cost codes
- Maintain accurate job cost records across a portfolio of active construction projects
- Issue and administer subcontracts, including compliance documentation (lien waivers, insurance certificates, contracts, W-9s)
- Review and process project-related invoices, subcontractor pay applications, and purchase orders
- Prepare and issue monthly progress billings, including change orders and retainage
- Monitor project budgets/costs; identify variances and work with project managers on cost to complete
- Support revenue recognition and work-in-progress (WIP) reporting
- Reconcile project costs and the job cost subledger; support month-end and year-end close
- Manage project closeout: final billings, retainage release, subcontract final releases, and final cost reconciliation
- Prepare and distribute job cost reports to project managers and company leadership
- Support accounts payable and accounts receivable functions as needed
- Assist the controller with ad hoc reporting
Requirements
- Construction industry experience required. Candidates without construction experience will not be considered
- 3+ years of construction, General Contracting, or related accounting experience
- Strong understanding of job costing, project accounting, and construction financial processes
- Sage 300 Construction and Real Estate (CRE) experience highly preferred
- Associate's degree or higher in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field preferred
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and the Microsoft Office suite
- Ability to analyze financial data and identify cost trends and discrepancies
- Strong organizational, communication, and time-management skills
- Self-starter who works well independently and alongside project managers
Preferred
- Familiarity with AIA billing procedures and WIP schedules
- Construction payroll and certified payroll reporting
- Knowledge of construction contracts, change orders, and subcontract management
- Experience supporting project managers with financial reporting and budget tracking
