Job summary

At AtkinsRéalis in Raleigh, NC is seeking an ITS/Traffic Engineering Intern to support design and development of plans for traffic systems, including signal design, fiber routing, and utility coordination.

You will organize ITS investigations, prepare straightforward reports under supervision, research alternatives, and help develop specifications and permit applications while collaborating with other disciplines and performing field observations as needed.

Qualifications

• 60 hours towards a civil engineering degree from an ABET accredited program by start of internship (Summer 2027).
• No formal experience required if enrolled in an Associate or Bachelor program in a related technical field.
• Basic computer skills to enter data into spreadsheets or databases.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
• Experience with AutoCAD or MicroStation preferred.

Responsibilities

• Design and develop ITS/Traffic plans and drawings, including preliminary layouts and final drawings (signal design, fiber routing, signing/striping, safety studies).
• Organize ITS/Traffic investigations and analyses within a defined scope.
• Prepare straightforward technical reports under supervision of a more experienced professional.
• Research design alternatives, site conditions, specs, and emerging technologies.
• Assist in developing specifications and permit applications; estimate man-hours, costs, and material quantities.
• Coordinate with other disciplines and perform field observations of construction.

Overview

AtkinsRéalis is seeking an ITS/Traffic Engineering Intern to join our Raleigh,NCoffice.

Your Role

• Design and develop plans and drawings, which may include the development of preliminary layout and/or final drawings related to ITS and Traffic design. Specifically, our work includes traffic signal design, fiber opticcommunicationscable routing and splicing, utility coordination, signing and striping, traffic safety studies, and more.

• Organize and conduct ITS and Traffic engineering investigations, planning, and analysis which have a well-defined scope.

• Outline and preparerelatively straightforwardtechnical reports of sections of more complex reports, working under the periodic review of a more experienced professional.

• Research feasibility of alternative design approaches, site conditions, regulatory agency specifications, industry best practices, state of the practices, and emerging technologies.

• Contributes to the development of specifications andpermitapplications andwritesmiscellaneous reports. Prepares preliminaryman-hour,costand material quantity estimates.

• Participates in quality control checks,maintainingquality standards in all work produced, checking computations, and/or reviewing reports, designs, and drawings developed by others.

• Coordinate with other disciplines asrequired. Perform field observations of construction whereappropriate.

• Performsuch other duties as the supervisor may from time to timedeemnecessary.

About You

• EXPERIENCE: Must have completed60 hourstowards a civil engineering degree from an ABET accredited program by the start of the internship (Summer2027).

Additional Information

Expected compensation range is between $25 - $31 hourly depending on skills, experience, and geographical location.
