Job summary

AtkinsRéalis is seeking an ITS/Traffic Engineering Intern for our Raleigh, NC office. The role involves designing plans for ITS and traffic projects, conducting investigations, and preparing straightforward technical reports under supervision.

Candidates should have completed 60 hours toward a civil engineering degree (ABET-accredited) and may be entering an Associate's or Bachelor's program. AutoCAD or MicroStation experience is preferred, with MS Office proficiency essential.

Qualifications

• Completed 60 hours toward a civil engineering degree from an ABET-accredited program by the start of the internship (Summer 2027).
• No prior experience required if accepted into an Associate's or Bachelor's degree program in a related technical field.
• Basic data entry into spreadsheets or databases using computer skills.
• Must be able to perform simple calculations; willingness to learn.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
• Experience with AutoCAD or MicroStation is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Design and develop plans and drawings for ITS and Traffic design, including preliminary layouts or final drawings.
• Organize ITS and Traffic investigations, planning, and analysis within a defined scope.
• Outline and prepare straightforward technical reports under supervision.
• Research feasibility of design approaches, site conditions, and regulatory specifications.
• Assist with specifications, permits, and estimates of man-hours, costs, and materials.
• Participate in quality-control checks and review reports and drawings.

Overview

AtkinsRéalis is seeking an ITS/Traffic Engineering Intern to join our Raleigh, NC office.

Your Role

• Design and develop plans and drawings, which may include the development of preliminary layout and/or final drawings related to ITS and Traffic design. Specifically, our work includes traffic signal design, fiber optic communications cable routing and splicing, utility coordination, signing and striping, traffic safety studies, and more.
• Organize and conduct ITS and Traffic engineering investigations, planning, and analysis which have a well-defined scope.
• Outline and prepare relatively straightforward technical reports of sections of more complex reports, working under the periodic review of a more experienced professional.
• Research feasibility of alternative design approaches, site conditions, regulatory agency specifications, industry best practices, state of the practices, and emerging technologies.
• Contributes to the development of specifications and permit applications and writes miscellaneous reports. Prepares preliminary man-hour, cost and material quantity estimates.
• Participates in quality control checks, maintaining quality standards in all work produced, checking computations, and/or reviewing reports, designs, and drawings developed by others.
• Coordinate with other disciplines as required. Perform field observations of construction where appropriate.
• Perform such other duties as the supervisor may from time to time deem necessary.

About You

Additional Information

Expected compensation range is between $25 - $31 hourly depending on skills, experience, and geographical location.
