Job summary

AtkinsRéalis seeks an ITS/Traffic Engineering Intern to join our Raleigh, NC office. The role involves designing and developing ITS and Traffic plans, including traffic signal design and fiber routing, under supervision.

You will organize investigations, prepare straightforward reports, and research design approaches while coordinating with other disciplines and performing field observations as needed. A strong mentorship environment and training are provided.

Qualifications

• Must have completed 60 hours toward civil engineering in an ABET-accredited program by Spring 2027.
• No experience required if enrolled in an associated or bachelor's degree program in a related field.

Responsibilities

• Design and develop ITS/Traffic plans and drawings, including preliminary/final layouts.
• Organize ITS/Traffic investigations and analyses within a defined scope.
• Prepare straightforward technical reports under supervision and review by a more experienced engineer.
• Research feasible design approaches, site conditions, and industry best practices.
• Assist in developing specifications, permit applications, and estimating man-hours and materials.
• Coordinate with other disciplines and perform field observations as needed.
• Support supervisor with additional duties as assigned.

Overview

AtkinsRéalis is seeking an ITS/Traffic Engineering Intern to join our Raleigh, NC office.

Your Role

• Design and develop plans and drawings, which may include the development of preliminary layout and/or final drawings related to ITS and Traffic design. Specifically, our work includes traffic signal design, fiber optic communications cable routing and splicing, utility coordination, signing and striping, traffic safety studies, and more.
• Organize and conduct ITS and Traffic engineering investigations, planning, and analysis which have a well-defined scope.
• Outline and prepare relatively straightforward technical reports of sections of more complex reports, working under the periodic review of a more experienced professional.
• Research feasibility of alternative design approaches, site conditions, regulatory agency specifications, industry best practices, state of the practices, and emerging technologies.
• Contributes to the development of specifications and permit applications and writes miscellaneous reports. Prepares preliminary man-hour, cost and material quantity estimates.
• Participates in quality control checks, maintaining quality standards in all work produced, checking computations, and/or reviewing reports, designs, and drawings developed by others.
• Coordinate with other disciplines as required. Perform field observations of construction where appropriate.
• Perform such other duties as the supervisor may from time to time deem necessary.

About You

• EXPERIENCE: Must have completed 60 hours towards a civil engineering degree from an ABET accredited program by the start of the internship (Spring 2027).
• EDUCATION: No experience is generally required if accepted into an Associate'S or Bachelor's degree program in a related technical field.

SPECIAL SKILLS:

• Basic computer skills required to enter data into spreadsheets or databases
• Math skills to perform simple calculations; willingness to learn.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office
• Experience with AutoCAD or MicroStation (preferred)

Additional Information

Expected compensation range is between $25 - $31 hourly depending on skills, experience, and geographical location.
