Job description

Max Planck Florida Institute for Neuroscience (MPFI) is currently seeking a qualified and motivated individual to join our Information Technology (IT) team as an IT Systems Technician. The selected candidate will be responsible for maintaining and supporting the Institute’s information technology infrastructure, including computer systems, cloud services, virtualization platforms, networking, enterprise applications, and scientific research computing infrastructure.

Responsibilities include the following:

  • Responds to technical support requests using MPFI’s communication channels, including phone, messaging, email, and helpdesk tickets;
  • Diagnoses and resolves issues involving computer hardware, software, cloud services, networking, virtual machines, and other IT infrastructure;
  • Builds, configures, deploys, and maintains Windows, Mac, and Linux workstations and servers;
  • Administers Microsoft 365, Active Directory, endpoint management platforms, and identity and access management systems;
  • Manages servers, including virtualization platforms and storage systems;
  • Supports scientific research equipment and computing systems, including high-resolution imaging systems and specialized workstations;
  • Provides support for audiovisual systems, conferencing technologies, and building and facility management systems;
  • Develops and maintains automation scripts to improve IT operations and system administration;
  • Manages software licensing and subscriptions to ensure compliance and efficient utilization;
  • Applies cybersecurity best practices, including endpoint protection, patch management, vulnerability remediation, and access control;
  • Documents system configurations, technical procedures, infrastructure changes, and support activities;
  • Participates in infrastructure projects, technology upgrades, and system deployments;
  • Coordinates with vendors on technical support, licensing, and equipment procurement;
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

A Bachelor’s Degree in a related technical discipline or an equivalent combination of education and experience and a minimum of two (2) years of related experience is required.

The selected candidate should have experience with and knowledge of several of the following technologies and areas:

  • Windows, macOS, and Linux operating systems;
  • Microsoft 365, Active Directory, and Entra ID;
  • Computer hardware, including workstations, servers, laptops, peripherals, and mobile devices;
  • Virtualization technologies (Proxmox, VMware);
  • Endpoint management platforms (Jamf Pro, Microsoft Intune, ManageEngine);
  • Enterprise networking (TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VLANs, VPN, switching, and Wi-Fi);
  • Scripting and automation (PowerShell, Python, Bash, Ansible);
  • Storage and NAS technologies;
  • Helpdesk and IT service management systems;
  • IT support for scientific research equipment, including high-resolution imaging systems;
  • Software licensing and software asset management;
  • Audiovisual and conferencing systems;
  • Building and facility management systems (Milestone, Lenel, Siemens, BrightSign, UPS maintenance);
  • Cybersecurity fundamentals, including endpoint security, patch management, identity and access management, and firewall management;
  • Must be self‑motivated and well organized, with strong teamwork and collaboration skills and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team while managing multiple priorities;
  • Must possess excellent troubleshooting, analytical, problem‑solving, communication, active listening, and customer service skills;
  • Must demonstrate sound technical judgment and a commitment to documentation and knowledge sharing;
  • Must be open to learning new technologies and be thorough, accurate, and detail‑oriented;
  • Must exhibit high levels of discretion, professional judgment, ethics, and confidentiality.
