Job summary

Hefty Seed Company is seeking an attentive IT support specialist to keep our 52 dealer locations running. This on-site role at our Baltic, SD office involves hands-on desktop support, server maintenance, and regular travel to other sites.

You’ll troubleshoot Windows, Microsoft 365, and Active Directory, configure networks, and document work in our ticketing system. Clear communication with non-technical staff and willingness to travel are essential.

Qualifications

• Excellent communication across phone, in person, and email.
• Experience fixing real machines.
• Working knowledge of Windows, Microsoft 365, and Active Directory.
• Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel to locations.
• Live within a reasonable commute or relocate to Baltic.

Responsibilities

• Answer the phone when hardware or login issues occur and stay with the user until resolved.
• Set up, image, and deploy Windows PCs; manage users, groups, and permissions in AD and Microsoft 365.
• Configure and troubleshoot network equipment — switches, firewalls, and Wi‑Fi across sites.
• Keep servers patched, backups running and verified.
• Support agronomy software, Point of Sale, and ERP used daily by teams.
• Travel to other locations to install equipment and help on-site.
• Log work in the ticketing system to ensure nothing is dropped.
• Teach users how to perform tasks rather than doing them all the time.

Read This Part First

This job is on-site at our corporate office — 47504 252nd Street, Baltic, SD 57003 — about 15 minutes north of Sioux Falls. It is not remote, not hybrid, not remote-friendly. Drop the address into your maps app before you apply, and make sure the drive works for you five days a week.

It also involves regular travel to our other locations. Some weeks you'll spend real time in a vehicle, not at a desk.

Most of the work happens between 8 and 5. Occasionally you'll be here in the evening for an upgrade or a cutover, and things get busier during planting and harvest — when a grower's season is on the line, a down system can't wait until Monday.

The Job

Hefty Seed works with 52 dealer store locations across the region — and we're still growing. You'd be one of three people keeping IT running for all of it.

Everyone here depends on systems working: agronomists in the field, sales, the people behind the counter at our stores, and the office staff in Baltic. When something breaks, they call you.

What you'll actually do:

• Answer the phone when someone's laptop, printer, or login isn't cooperating — and stay with them until it's actually fixed
• Set up, image, and deploy Windows PCs; manage users, groups, and permissions in Active Directory and Microsoft 365
• Configure and troubleshoot network equipment — switches, firewalls, and Wi-Fi across our sites
• Keep servers patched, and keep backups running and verified
• Support the line-of-business software our teams live in every day — agronomy software, point of sale, and ERP
• Travel to our other locations to install equipment, fix what can't be fixed over the phone, and check in on the people there
• Log your work in our ticketing system so nothing gets dropped
• Teach people. A real share of this job is showing someone how to do the thing instead of just doing it for them.

What We're Looking For

We'd rather be direct about this than waste your time or ours.

The things that actually matter:

• Communication skills. This one is non-negotiable. You can stay calm and clear with someone who is frustrated, in a hurry, and not technical — on the phone, in person, and in writing. You explain what went wrong in plain language instead of jargon, and you follow up. Strong technical skills paired with poor communication will not work in this role, and we would rather say that now than after the interview.
• You've fixed real machines. Not read about it — done it. Be ready to walk us through a problem you actually solved.
• Working knowledge of Windows, Microsoft 365, and Active Directory. You can create a user, sort out a mapped drive, reset access, and explain in plain English what group policy does.
• Networking you can explain out loud. What a switch does. What DNS is. How you'd go about figuring out why one office lost its internet connection.
• A valid driver's license and genuine willingness to travel to our locations, a clean driving record and the ability to obtain a DOT medical card.
• You live within a reasonable commute of Baltic, or you're moving here before you start.

Helps, but we won't rule you out without it:

• CompTIA A+, Network+, or Microsoft certifications
• A background in agriculture — or you just grew up around it
• Power BI or CAD experience — both come up here, and either one is a real plus
• You're the person your family calls when their computer breaks. That instinct is worth more here than a line on a resume.

On experience level: we're genuinely open. If you've got a couple of years of help desk under your belt and a good head on your shoulders, we'll teach you the rest — the network side, the server side, our software. What we can't teach is patience with people and the willingness to keep digging until something works.
