Job summary

Gurtz Electric is hiring a traveling IT Support Specialist to be the primary technical resource for our offices and jobsites across Illinois and Indiana. You will spend much of your week on the road handling hands-on support, site networking, and technology deployments while staying closely connected to the Information Services team in Arlington Heights.

This role is ideal for someone comfortable being the only IT person on site, who can assess situations, decide quickly, and act.

Qualifications

Gurtz Electric is hiring a traveling IT Support Specialist to be the primary technical resource for our offices and jobsites across Illinois and Indiana. You will spend much of your week on the road (western and southern Illinois and Northern Indiana) handling hands‑on support, site networking, and technology deployments, while staying closely connected to the Information Services team in Arlington Heights.

This role is for someone comfortable being the only IT person in the building. The team has your back, but when you are on site, you assess the situation, decide what to do, and do it.

Key Responsibilities:

Multi‑Site Support

• ·Travel regularly to company offices and jobsites and act as the primary IT presence at assigned remote facilities.
• ·Provide Tier 1 and Tier 2 support for laptops, desktops, printers, mobile devices, software, and peripherals in both office and construction environments.
• ·Configure, deploy, and maintain end‑user hardware and software.

Site Networking & Connectivity

• ·Set up and support connectivity for jobsites and remote offices, including Starlink installations and Ubiquiti UniFi networks (gateways, switches, access points, and controller management).
• ·Install and maintain workstations, wireless infrastructure, and other site technology, and troubleshoot connectivity problems on the spot.
• ·Assist with hardware evaluations, upgrades, and lifecycle management.
• ·Support software deployments, driver updates, and standardization across sites.
• ·Help employees adopt AI‑powered tools and workflow automation, and work with engineering, design, and operations teams to find process improvements technology can deliver.

Team & Documentation

• ·Coordinate with the Arlington Heights IS team to keep support practices consistent across locations.
• Document solutions, share knowledge, and assist with technology orientation for new employees.

Required Qualifications:

• ·Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
• ·Experience supporting Windows environments and Microsoft 365.
• ·Hands‑on networking experience: able to configure, troubleshoot, and document small‑site networks.
• ·Proven ability to work independently as a remote member of a centralized team.
• ·Valid driver's license and willingness to travel regularly, with occasional overnights.

Preferred Qualifications:

• ·Starlink: installation, placement, and performance troubleshooting (strongly preferred).
• ·Ubiquiti UniFi: access points, switches, Dream Machine or Cloud Gateway, controller administration, and site-to-site VPN (strongly preferred).
• ·Python or other scripting and automation tools.
• ·Exposure to AI tools, large language models, or workflow automation platforms.
• ·Experience in construction, engineering, manufacturing, or other multi‑site environments.

Travel:

• ·Frequent travel throughout Illinois and Indiana, with occasional overnight travel based on project and support needs.
• ·Current regional sites include Coal City, Illinois and Laporte, Indiana, with additional locations as the company grows.
