Job summary

University Information Technology (UIT) at the University of Utah seeks an IT Software Developer II to design, code, test, and maintain software for campus systems. You will collaborate with stakeholders across university IT teams, contribute to ERP/PeopleSoft environments, and apply languages such as C/C++, SQL, and PeopleTools to deliver reliable solutions in a large-scale higher education setting.

Qualifications

  • 1 year of higher education can be substituted for 1 year of related work experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent plus 4 years, or Master’s degree plus 2 years of related experience.
  • Experience with PeopleSoft or ERP development is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Codes applications as per written specs and engineer instructions.
  • Supports other programmers and analysts with programming tasks.
  • Investigates vendor products; reports features and limitations of tools.
  • Attends team meetings; communicates programming issues to staff and customers.
  • Presents findings and recommendations in writing and verbally.
  • Tunes and modifies code for efficiency; writes interface programs.
  • Troubleshoots code and fixes bugs.
  • Tests applications; follows version control and deployment guidelines.
  • Analyzes program output and error logs.

Job Summary

About UIT : University Information Technology ( UIT ) , the central IT service provider for the University of Utah, reports to the U’s Chief Information Officer and is responsible for many of the U’s shared IT services including the wired and wireless network; Campus Information Services ( CIS ) portal; UMail, telephone, and online collaboration; digital learning technologies; information security; software licensing; and a host of other IT systems and services. About the University of Utah: Located in Salt Lake City, the U is the flagship institution of the State of Utah’s system of higher education, home to arts and museum venues and a member of the BIG -12 Conference .   • Codes applications according to written specifications and verbal instructions from Software Design Engineers.
  • Supports other department programmers and system analysts as well as other technical staff with programming and analysis related activities.
  • Investigates vendor products and provides information to programmers and other project members about features and limitations of programming tools and languages: Follows industry recommendations and department programming standards to ensure code efficiency and reliability.
  • Attends team meetings and communicates (verbally and in writing) programming issues to appropriate staff and customers.
  • Presents finding, recommendations, and specifications both verbally and in writing.
  • Tunes and modifies code to ensure efficiency.Writes system interface programs.
  • Troubleshoots and repairs existing code.
  • Investigates system “bugs” and provides input on code fixes and alternative solutions.
  • Tests applications and follows department version control and code promotion guidelines.
  • Performs analysis on program output and error logs.

Minimum Qualifications

EQUIVALENCY STATEMENT : 1 year of higher education can be substituted for 1 year of directly related work experience (Example: bachelor’s degree = 4 years of directly related work experience).

IT Software Developer, II: Requires a bachelor’s (or equivalency) + 4 years or a master’s (or equivalency) + 2 years of directly related work experience.

Preferences
  • 1-2 years’ experience that includes programming experience with large system implementations; a degree in Computer Science, Business, or a related field may be used to offset experience.
  • Experience in an ERP software development environment.
  • Basic knowledge of the overall development process and skills in programming and scripting languages.
  • Fundamental understanding of relational database concepts.
  • Demonstrated testing and troubleshooting skills; ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrated human relations and communications skills, and ability to work in a team environment.
  • A strong commitment to excellence in service.
  • Experience with coding applications within a Peoplesoft or Enterprise SIS system including PeopleTools, PeopleCode, Application Engine, Application Package, BI Publisher, nVision Reports, PeopleSoft QueryTool, SQL , SQR , C or C++.
