Summary of Duties

The Computational Scientist position is responsible for assisting the WSU research community in the development, use, and optimization of application software on high-performance computing (HPC) clusters. A broad spectrum of application domains must be supported in accordance with the university’s major research areas in high-performance scientific computing and data analysis. Responsibilities include the installation and management of compilers, software libraries, development environments, and applications, as well as assisting researchers in their use and deployment on WSU’s research computing resources. This position will work closely with researchers to identify and solve challenges in optimizing the performance of scientific computing software on HPC resources. This position will also provide training in the use of WSU’s high-performance computing clusters and related parallel software technologies.

Position Qualifications

Required Qualifications

A Bachelor’s degree and three (3) years professional experience OR a combination of education and experience totaling seven (7) years from which comparable knowledge and abilities are acquired.

Additional Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in computer science, natural sciences, or related field.
Experience using the Linux operating system.
Programming experience in one or more languages compatible with modern HPC architectures (C, C++, Fortran, Java, Python, and R).
Familiarity with one or more parallel computing models (MPI, OpenMP, PThreads, OpenACC, OpenCL, CUDA).
Demonstrated knowledge in the installation and optimization of scientific application software on an HPC cluster.
Familiarity with HPC job schedulers (SLURM experience a plus) and module systems (Lmod experience a plus).

Preferred Qualifications

Ph.D. in computer science, natural sciences, or related field.
Experience in the installation and use of compilers and scientific libraries for HPC clusters, including the Intel Compiler Suite and Math Kernel Library.
Familiarity with profiling and performance analysis tools (Tau, Vampir, TotalView).
Experience developing parallel scientific applications.
Experience with scientific workflows.
Demonstrated record of accomplishments in high-performance scientific computing.
Demonstrated ability to work productively in a diverse and multi-disciplinary academic and research environment.
