Job summary

University of Washington Information Technology seeks an HPC Systems Engineer to join the Research Computing Operations team in Seattle. You will help manage and scale large Linux-based HPC clusters, automate deployments, and collaborate with campus researchers across multiple domains.

The role requires a 24x7 on-call rotation, hybrid in-office presence, and a focus on reliability, performance, and security.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
• 4+ years of Linux system administration experience.
• Basic knowledge of networking hardware, software, protocols, and concepts; ability to work with minimal supervision.
• Excellent written and verbal communication, technical documentation, and user liaison skills.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, adapt, integrate, manage, optimize, or deploy monitoring for new or existing systems, software, or automation to improve performance and reliability.
• Perform system administration tasks including accounts, software installation, firmware updates, backups, and monitoring improvements.
• Monitor HPC systems health and troubleshoot performance, health, or reliability issues.
• Triage, respond to, and resolve tickets and on-call pages.
• Research and architect new technologies and evolution of existing systems and clusters.
• Share experience and knowledge with team members.
• Other duties as assigned.
