Job summary

Winston-Salem State University is seeking an IT Applications Professional, Programmer Analyst to support campus-wide application training, user support, and enterprise technology engagement. The role is 100% onsite with in-person work required, reporting to OIT.

The candidate will design and deliver technical training, provide advanced user support, coordinate software implementations, and maintain effective communications across channels in support of university goals.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Instructional Technology, Computer Science, Information Systems, Education, or a related field.
  • Three years of hands-on experience in enterprise software application support, administration, or system monitoring.
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft 365 and SharePoint implementation and support.
  • Excellent communication skills to explain technical concepts to non-technical users.

Responsibilities

  • Design and Deliver Technical Training across classroom, webcast, and online modalities.
  • Provide advanced (Level III) user support and coordinate software implementations and upgrades.
  • Analyze business processes and develop functional specifications for software solutions.
  • Develop communications strategies and guidance aligned with university branding.

The Office of Information Technology ( OIT ) at Winston-Salem State University is seeking a knowledgeable and service-oriented IT Applications Professional to support campus-wide application training, user support, and enterprise technology engagement.

The Office of Information Technology works to support and strengthen the academic, administrative, and associated research needs of all faculty, staff, and students at Winston-Salem State University through the provisioning, support, maintenance, availability, and outreach of Information Technology Services. Reporting to Application Administration Services ( AAS ), this position plays a key role in providing advanced application support, coordinating user training, and promoting digital technology awareness for faculty, staff, and students. The IT Applications Professional helps the campus community effectively utilize software systems integral to academic and administrative operations.
This position is 100% onsite. In-person work is required.

Core responsibilities include:
Design and Deliver Technical Training

  • Manage the end-to-end training lifecycle, including needs assessment, instructional design, content development, multi-modal delivery (e.g., classroom, webcast, online), and evaluation to align with organizational goals and compliance requirements.
  • Create instructional materials such as course outlines, job aids, and exercises to enhance learning outcomes.
  • Conduct regular training sessions for employees and students, ensuring high-quality, consistent content delivery.
  • Ensure training remains relevant and impactful by updating materials based on user feedback, application enhancements, and performance data.
  • Promote a culture of continuous technical learning to strengthen organizational capability and support change initiatives.
Application Support, User Enablement, and Project Coordination
  • Provide advanced (Level III ) user support by resolving complex software issues, optimizing application performance, and guiding users toward effective software use.
  • Coordinate software implementations, upgrades, and integration projects, serving as a liaison between users, IT teams, and vendors to ensure successful deployment and adoption.
  • Analyze business processes, develop functional specifications, and conduct system testing to validate software solutions.
  • Translate complex technical information into accessible guidance for non-technical users, supporting confident and independent application use.
Manage Internal and External Communications
  • Develop and manage communication strategies across internal and external channels, including websites, social media, newsletters, and internal correspondence, in alignment with university branding.
  • Create and maintain style guides, accessibility standards, and brand voice documentation to ensure consistent messaging.
  • Consult with executive leadership to establish communication policies and procedures, including those for crisis response.
  • Support staff in communication development and provide training on effective, accessible communication practices.
  • Monitor and evaluate communication efforts to identify areas for improvement and inform strategy refinement.
Maintain Technical Expertise and Promote Best Practices
  • Maintain expert-level knowledge of enterprise applications and software systems by staying current with product updates, new features, and evolving functionalities to support users effectively and maximize organizational efficiency.
  • Monitor and apply relevant industry standards, best practices, and compliance requirements to ensure that application usage and support strategies align with institutional goals and regulatory expectations.
  • Leverage technical expertise to provide high-quality end-user support and training, ensuring users can effectively apply software tools to their roles through targeted instruction, troubleshooting, and practical guidance.

    • Equivalent work experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis
  • Three years of hands-on experience in enterprise software application support, application administration, business application consulting, software implementation, or system monitoring
  • Demonstrated experience in instructional and learning theory, training methodologies, and software training best practices
  • Strong knowledge in the implementation, configuration, and support of enterprise applications, particularly Microsoft 365 and SharePoint.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to convey technical concepts to non-technical users.
Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education
  • Demonstrated experience in supporting end-user adoption through documentation, live training, and user engagement strategies
  • Experience developing functional specifications, training materials, or technical documentation
  • Familiarity with software integration practices, including the use or development of APIs
  • Hands-on experience supporting learning management systems ( LMS ), content management systems ( CMS ), or enterprise scheduling tools such as 25Live
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver user training through multiple formats—such as virtual sessions, onsite workshops, and self-paced materials
  • Experience contributing to or managing technology-related communication efforts, including newsletters, social media, and intranet content
