Job summary

City of Albuquerque is seeking an irrigation technician to operate and maintain large irrigation systems including pump stations, underground piping, valves, wiring, sprinklers and controllers. You will perform soil moisture analysis and implement watering procedures for healthy turf.

Responsibilities

• Operate and maintain large, self-contained irrigation systems including pump stations, underground piping, valves, wiring, sprinklers and controllers.
• Make rounds of the golf course to determine watering needs and check for issues with lines and heads.
• Observe and adjust pump and water line operations to ensure proper pressure and coverage.
• Troubleshoot and repair inoperative controllers, valves and sprinkler heads; perform preventive maintenance on motors and safety devices.
• Perform field electrical repairs to controllers, valves, lines and other irrigation components.

Position Summary

Essential And Supplemental Functions

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Essential functions may include but are not limited to the functions listed below. Must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without a reasonable accommodation.

• Operate and maintain large, self-contained irrigation systems including pump stations, underground piping, valves, wiring, sprinklers and controllers; make rounds of the golf course to determine watering needs for the day and check for broken lines, heads and other parts.
• Observe and make corrective adjustments in the operation of pumps and water lines, ensuring proper pressure and coverage.
• Troubleshoot and repair inoperative controllers, valves, lines, sprinklers and related equipment; overhaul sprinkler heads and valves as required to ensure proper and reliable service.
• Check computer for water settings at each course and change the settings if needed; adjust automatic controllers to ensure proper soil moisture content for the growing of healthy turf.
• Create and update printout of watering procedures for troubleshooting purposes; plan and implement repairs to improve the water systems.
• Apply fertilizer to greens, tees and fairways; apply chemicals to turf areas; apply weed control chemicals to desert areas; document use of chemicals.
• Repair irrigation pipes and sprinklers as needed and assist in upgrading the irrigation system; level sprinklers and valve boxes.
• Order necessary parts for repairs; perform a variety of repairs including broken lines, sprinkler heads, leaking valves, and broken wires; raise or lower sprinkler heads and valve boxes; report repairs to higher-level supervisory or management staff.
• Perform minor field electrical repairs to controllers, electric valves, lines and other irrigation components.
• Perform preventive maintenance on pump house motors, check for proper operation of safety devices.

SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS:

Minimum Education, Experience And Additional Requirements

Education and experience directly related to the minimum requirements below may be interchangeable on a year for year basis.

High school diploma or GED supplemented by thirty (30) credit hours vocational training in landscaping;

Two (2) years experience performing irrigation system maintenance and repair.

Additional Requirements

• Possession of a valid New Mexico Driver's License, or the ability to obtain by date of hire.
• Possession of a City Operator's Permit (COP) within 6 months from date of hire.
• May be required to work weekends/holidays/odd days off/shift work
