Job summary

Code Metal, Inc. is building a pioneering IP and regulatory function. You will join a growing legal team and work closely with Engineering, Product, Research, and Marketing to protect our technology and guide its lawful deployment in defense and national security contexts.

You will own the patent and trademark strategy, advise on export controls and AI regulation, and help shape practical policies and training for a fast-moving, globally engaged company.

Qualifications

• J.D. from an accredited law school and active bar membership in good standing with the bar of the state where your office is located (DC, CA, or MA).
• 4 to 8 years of patent and trademark experience, ideally including both law firm and in-house work.
• Registration to practice before the USPTO.
• A degree in computer science, electrical or computer engineering, mathematics, or a related technical field.
• Experience with IP transactional work, including licensing, portfolio management, and diligence.
• Excellent drafting, negotiation, analytical, and communication skills.
• A quick, independent learner able to contribute across a broad startup legal function and manage multiple priorities.

Responsibilities

• Build and manage the company's global patent and trademark portfolios, including filing strategy and docket management.
• Draft and prosecute patent applications covering software, AI, and related technologies.
• Advise on export control compliance under ITAR and EAR and manage classifications and licenses.
• Review invention disclosures and run the patent review process.
• Develop IP policy, training, and collaboration with engineering and product teams.
• Provide guidance on regulatory issues across export controls, AI policy, and government procurement terms.
