Job summary

Code Metal is building its legal function to protect and monetize its technology. You will lead the patent and trademark portfolio strategy, draft and prosecute applications, and advise on export controls and AI policy.

You will partner with engineering, product, research, and marketing to ensure claims are accurate and defensible across markets. You will also review marketing materials, manage IP-related agreements, and coordinate with external counsel.

Qualifications

• J.D. from an accredited law school and bar admission in CA/DC/MA preferred.
• Experience drafting and prosecuting software/AI patent applications.
• Experience with IP transactional work (licensing, portfolio management, diligence).
• Excellent drafting, negotiation, analytical, and communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Build and manage global patent and trademark portfolios, filing strategy and renewal management.
• Draft and prosecute patent applications covering software/AI, respond to USPTO actions.
• Advise on export controls (ITAR/EAR), including classifications, licenses, and plans.
• Provide guidance on AI regulatory landscape for product and go-to-market decisions.
• Review marketing materials for substantiation of claims and defensibility of tech descriptions.
• Develop IP and regulatory compliance policy and train technical teams.
• Manage outside counsel and oversee IP-related negotiations and budgets.
• Conduct freedom-to-operate analyses and trademark clearances for new products.
