Job description

Lex Generalis (Lex) is a boutique law firm focused on servicing universities and research institutions, venture capital firms, and venture capital-backed businesses. Lex is based in Arizona and employs a small team that with a growing group of companies in the industrial technologies, energy transition, and life sciences spaces.

The clients Lex advises are focused on bringing to market new diagnostics for several forms of cancer, advanced capabilities for gene sequencing, energy efficiencies in lithium-ion battery manufacturing, and magnets without rare Earth elements. Lex’s team works closely with these clients to secure financing, build and defend patent portfolios, and engage in beneficial commercial agreements.

We are looking for a full-time IP Paralegal to assist with the management and protection of the intellectual property portfolio, including patents, trademarks, copyrights, and trade secrets. The IP Paralegal will play a key role in supporting the legal team in various IP-related tasks and ensuring compliance with relevant laws and regulations. This position is remote.

Key Activities

  • Assist with preparing and filing patent and trademark documents with USPTO, preparing client correspondence, and template documents.
  • Prepare, revise, and finalize US and PCT applications and other core prosecution documents for filing (e.g., responses/amendments, allowance, restriction).
  • Conduct IP due diligence, including trademarks, patents, copyrights, and domain names.
  • Monitor and compile Information Disclosure Statements, ensuring adherence to current regulations and best practices.
  • Review and process IP-related communications and correspondence across firm and portfolio.
  • Develop knowledge of latest patent rules and adapting practices to comply.
  • Monitor and update both electronic docket for responsible attorney(s) and assigned paralegal tasks on a daily basis.
  • Coordinate conference calls and meetings for internal teams and quarterly updates for Limited Partners.
  • Assist with a broad range of projects related to clients and portfolio companies with varying degrees of complexity, adapting procedures as needed to meet business needs, managing data room, and preparing and organizing documents.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience as a paralegal managing intellectual property matters.
  • Paralegal certification is a plus.
  • In-depth knowledge of the patent lifecycle—from invention through maintenance—and familiarity with U.S. and international patent prosecution, including procedures, annuities, and deadlines.
  • Experience managing both U.S. and foreign patent and trademark filings, including proficiency with USPTO on-line filing systems and procedures, ePCT, and eMadrid.
  • Prior experience with intellectual property docketing, the NIST iEdison system, and/or WIPO ST.26 sequence listings is a plus.
  • Detail-oriented with a proven ability to prioritize deadlines and deliver high-quality work efficiently.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to adapt practices and technologies to maximize workflow efficiency.
  • Excellent communication and coordination skills to support team activities and client interactions.

Salary Range

  • $70,000 - $100,000
