Job summary

California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS) is seeking an Investment Officer II to focus on energy transition investments and sustainability integration across its portfolio. The role supports due diligence in climate opportunities, market mapping, and building an investment pipeline while collaborating with the Sustainable Investments team.

Qualifications

  • Must meet the Minimum Qualifications stated in the Classification Specification for Investment Officer II.
  • Must be able to qualify for a Surety Bond.
  • Must undergo a criminal history review process using Live Scan fingerprinting.
  • Subject to Personal Trading Regulations and Conflict of Interest Code requirements, including disclosure of certain investment information and use of a designated trading platform for securities transactions.
  • Must be willing to file a Statement of Economic Interest (Form 700).
  • Available to work a hybrid schedule with up to two days remote and three or more days onsite per week.

About this Role

The Sustainable Investments (SI) program at CalPERS is seeking an Investment Officer II to focus primarily on investing in the energy transition and low carbon economy while advancing sustainability integration across the broader CalPERS portfolio. This position offers an opportunity to work on climate-related investment opportunities and contribute to the development of strategic investment initiatives in a rapidly evolving sector. The Investment Officer II will support due diligence processes for climate-related investment opportunities across private markets and engage in sourcing and market mapping activities to identify asset managers focused on climate solutions. The role involves collaborating with the SI team to develop a comprehensive investment pipeline across private markets and supporting CalPERS’ broader sustainability integration efforts across its portfolio. The position includes responsibility for participating in the development and regular updates of sustainable investments strategic plans and research reports, typically focused on specific sectors, geographies, or trends. This includes sourcing, gathering, organizing, applying, and presenting data and research to support investment decision-making. The position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule, with up to two days of remote work and three or more days onsite per week. Travel may be required to attend trainings and conferences. This is a permanent full-time position with eligibility for an annual incentive award of 0-10% of salary based on achievement against quantitative and qualitative measures. Employees who possess Charter Financial Analyst (CFA) certification may receive a 5% monthly base pay differential.
