Job summary

Detroit Public Schools Community District is seeking a Detective to conduct thorough investigations, interview witnesses, review records, and prepare judicial documentation. The role may include uniformed duties to support school and community safety initiatives.

The position requires MCOLES licensure, police investigation experience, and strong writing/communication skills. On-call duties twice a month and collaboration with external partners are essential aspects of the role.

Qualifications

• Must hold MCOLES license current within the last year.
• Minimum of two years police investigation experience.
• Excellent writing skills; provide example warrant documentation upon request.
• Strong oral and written communication skills.
• Self-motivated and accountable.
• Proficient with Microsoft Office, TLO, TALON.
• Ability to interpret/apply complex laws and testify in court.
• Available for on-call duties twice monthly.
• Capable of working independently or in teams.
• Ability to plan, organize, prioritize and meet deadlines.
• Efficiently tag and manage evidence.
• Articulate findings and provide complete case details to supervisors.
• Maintain case files and timely updates to supervisors.
• Maintain victim contact information and case updates.
• Analyze and maintain evidence records for court use.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate and manage assigned investigations by planning activities, organizing workload, and prioritizing tasks to meet deadlines.
• Maintain accurate and comprehensive case files; prepare detailed reports and investigative correspondence in a timely manner.
• Ensure all investigative work is thorough, accurate, and submitted promptly.
• Testify in court and present investigative findings clearly and professionally.
• Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with supervisors, colleagues, victims, and external partners.
• Collaborate with law enforcement agencies and the Prosecutor¿s Office to support case development and prosecution.
• Conduct investigations involving crimes against persons and property, including but not limited to assaults, sex crimes, burglary, threats, and homicide, and make arrests when necessary.
• Apply knowledge of relevant laws, departmental policies, and law enforcement practices within the District.
• Effectively interact with and manage cases involving both juvenile and adult offenders.
• Adhere to DPSCD PD policies, procedures, rules, regulations, and directives.
• Demonstrate and uphold DPSCD PD Core Values in all duties and interactions.
• Utilize and continue to develop effective interview and investigative techniques.
• Maintain professionalism, sound judgment, and confidentiality in all aspects of the role.
• Perform uniformed duties as needed to support District operations, including school-based and community events, safety initiatives, and other assignments as directed.
