The Lansing School District serves over 10,000 PreK-12 students across 25 school buildings in the increasingly diverse urban community of Lansing, MI. The Public Safety Officer will maintain the safety and security of their building by responding to emergency and non-emergency situations. The position involves maintaining confidentiality, conducting investigations, and ensuring proper communication with staff. This is a full-time role, requiring flexibility and strong decision-making skills.

Qualifications - Education & Certification
  • Minimum high school diploma plus some college coursework
  • Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice or related field preferred.
Qualifications - Experience
  • MCOLES certification preferred, or ability to obtain certification.
  • Previous law enforcement or security experience preferred.
Qualifications - Skills/Knowledge
  • Strong communication, investigation, and report-writing skills.
  • Ability to make quick decisions and maintain confidentiality.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements
  • The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position.
  • Must be able to stand, walk, and move quickly between indoor and outdoor settings for extended periods.
  • Regularly required to bend, kneel, crouch, and assist with physical transfers or interventions involving students.
  • Must be able to lift, push, or carry up to 50 pounds as needed.
  • Frequent verbal communication is required to support students, coordinate with staff, and manage emergent situations.
  • Occasional use of computers, radios, and other communication or documentation tools.
  • May be exposed to noise, weather conditions, and other elements associated with a school environment.
  • Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

$20.13 - $24.01 an hour

Hourly rate based on CCLPI salary schedule. Previous equivalent experience may factor into placement, but most new hires will be placed at the base of the salary scale.

1 FTE (8 hours per day 5 days per week)
