Job description

Location: Austin, TX (hybrid, 2 +/- days a week in the office, depending on business needs and personal preference)

Reports to: An awesome Controller who is known for being an excellent mentor. She wants to help her team grow and cultivate their career trajectory.

Position summary

The Inventory Accounting Manager owns the accounting for the organization's inventory, a balance of more than $200 million, and plays a key part in a company-wide ERP conversion. Full disclosure, not everyone is excited about the system change, so you'll need to help the team get through this transformation.

This is a hands-on role. It starts as an individual contributor working closely with the Controller and a tenured accounting team, with room to take on broader responsibility over time. If you like rolling up your sleeves and being the person people come to with the hard inventory questions, keep reading. Management experience isn't required. If you haven't led a team yet, this is a place where you can grow into it

What you'll do
  • Own the accounting for inventory across warehouse locations, including costing, valuation, and reserves for excess and obsolete stock
  • Review and approve inventory reconciliations, journal entries, and account analyses
  • Oversee physical inventories and cycle counts, and chase down the variances until they make sense
  • Dig into inventory trends, turns, and margin impact, and explain what's going on to accounting and operations leadership
  • Set and maintain the inventory accounting policies and procedures
ERP conversion
  • Represent inventory accounting in the move to a new ERP system
  • Weigh in on what accounting needs from the system, including costing methods, item setup, and general ledger mapping
  • Help validate the inventory data migration, cutover counts, and opening balances, so day one in the new system isn't a surprise
  • Pitch in on testing, documenting the new processes, and getting the team comfortable
  • Work with IT, purchasing, warehouse operations, and the implementation partner to get issues solved
  • Bring some patience and a sense of humor. Change is hard, and you'll be one of the people helping everyone get through it
Close, reporting, and audit
  • Lead the inventory portion of month-end and year-end close
  • Prepare and review inventory schedules and supporting analysis for the financial statements
  • Be the go-to contact for the external auditors on inventory, including count observations and valuation testing
Controls and process improvement
  • Take a fresh look at internal controls over inventory, purchasing, and receiving, and tighten them up where needed
  • Find better ways to do things, especially the ones the new system makes possible
Team
  • Work alongside the inventory accounting staff and be a technical resource for them. They know this inventory inside and out, and you'll learn a lot from each other
  • Help the Controller with special projects and pick up broader accounting responsibilities as the role grows
What you'll need
  • An active CPA license (this one is a must)
  • 6+ years of progressive accounting experience, including hands‑on responsibility for inventory accounting at a company with a large, multi‑location inventory
  • Strong working knowledge of U.S. GAAP for inventory, including costing methods, valuation, and reserves
  • Experience leading or playing a significant role in physical inventories and cycle count programs
  • Experience working directly with external auditors
  • A track record of working well with operations, purchasing, and IT
  • Advanced Excel skills and experience with a mid‑size or large ERP system
  • The ability to explain accounting results in plain English to people who aren't accountants
Nice to have
  • You've been through an ERP implementation or conversion before, especially the inventory data migration and cutover, and lived to tell about it
  • Background in wholesale distribution, electrical or utility supply, industrial distribution, or manufacturing
  • Public accounting experience. We like someone who's seen the other side of an audit, but it's not required.
Why you'll like it here
  • Excellent work/life balance. Really
  • A hybrid schedule with around 2 days a week in the Austin office
  • A tenured, stable accounting team. People stay
  • A Controller who will invest in you
  • Real ownership: a $200M+ inventory balance and an important seat on a company‑wide system conversion
  • Room to grow into broader accounting responsibility
