Job summary

Children’s Wisconsin is hiring a Spanish-speaking Interpreter I (Part-Time) to facilitate communication between clinicians and patients in Milwaukee and surrounding areas. The role involves interpretation in medical settings, sight translation of documents, and collaboration with staff to ensure accurate, culturally competent care.

Requirements include completion of a Medical Interpreting course or enrollment with completion within 6 months, HS diploma, and bilingual proficiency.

Communication may take place in a medical or community setting, providing interpretation, sight translation and/or simple translation on an AVS (After Visit Summary). - Assists in facilitating communication between staff and clients or patients and their parents or guardians, before, during and after treatment using less complex medical terminology. - Interprets in a variety of situations and settings, e.g. appointments, meetings, examinations, treatment or therapy sessions. - Provides non-English speaking patients and families with an appropriate sight translation of medical/social/health care information and other important documents from an English version. - Attends in-services and educational meetings to maintain and enhance professional expertise. Attends and contributes to assigned committees, task forces, special projects. - Translate, proof read, edit, and prepare the final version of written materials in the electronic health record (Epic) or MS Word. - May provide additional down-time support with scheduling, audits, special projects. - **Completion of Medical Interpreting course that includes ethics, medical terminology or proven linguistic ability in medical interpreting. required - Current course enrollment accepted as long as one semester is complete, and course completion is within 6 months of hire. preferred** - High School graduate (or Certificate of General Educational Development (GED) or High School Equivalency Diploma (HSED))- 1+ years work experience required - Bilingual who speaks, reads and writes proficiently in both native and target language (**Spanish)** with ability to break linguistic and cultural barriers between patients and medical staff. - Ability to shift from one language to another in simultaneous and consecutive mode of interpreting. **- Must pass verbal and written proficiency tests with an overall score of 80%.** - Knowledge of basic medical terminology used in primary care and dental services through completion of Medical Terminology class. - Knowledge of the National Council on Interpreting in Health Care (NCIHC) code of ethics. - Computer and word processing expertise including MS Word, Outlook, Excel, comfort with an iPad and working in our electronic health record. - Good customer service skills, strong communication skills and excellent listening skills. - Effective organizational skills with attention to detail including ability to prioritize and assess needs. - Ability to multi-task in order to manage interpretation for more than one patient/family at a time. - Analytical ability to complete audits, proof read translations and review scheduling; making recommendations for change. - National certification must be maintained.
