Job summary

Smalley Steel Ring Company is seeking an International Sales Engineer to grow and support our global sales territory from Lake Zurich, IL. You will manage customer relationships, respond to quotes, and partner with marketing on lead generation and events.

We prize engineering rigor, cross-cultural communication, and the ability to travel internationally up to 6–10 weeks per year to meet customers and attend tradeshows.

Qualifications

• B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or related technical field.
• Fluency in Mandarin Chinese and/or Japanese desirable but not required.
• 3-5 years in engineering or technical sales with direct customer contact preferred.
• Ability to develop and maintain customer relationships.
• Knowledge of CRM or sales systems is a plus.
• Willingness to travel internationally up to 6-10 weeks/year.
• Available to communicate in local business hours in territory.
• Strong interpersonal and cross-cultural communication.
• Self-starter with initiative.
• Authorized to work in the US permanently.

Position Overview

We have an opening for an International Sales Engineer in our Sales Engineering Department. This group of engineers is responsible for the sale of our products, as well as technical support to customers. The International Sales Engineer is responsible for managing customer relationships and needs, as well as maintaining and developing their assigned international sales territory by responding to part quote requests, interacting with customers, attending tradeshows, and partnering with marketing on various lead generation and follow up activities. We provide constant on-the-job training to help to develop our employees.

Job Responsibilities

• Monitor customer sales activity and nurture new leads and opportunities
• Plan, prepare and execute face-to-face and virtual meetings with customers in given international territories.
• Cultivate and develop assigned territory through frequent customer contact by nurturing sales funnel, leads and opportunities.
• Develop assigned territory by expanding targeted accounts, working with engineering on customized part requirements and designs, cooperating with marketing by attending tradeshows and following up on hot leads.
• Act as the primary contact for customers (in-person and virtually) in assigned territory.
• Work directly with various internal groups (including Engineering, Marketing, Customer Service, Estimating, Quality, etc.) on part designing, pricing, contracts, territory development etc.

Qualifications

• B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or a related technical field (e.g. Industrial Engineering).
• Professional fluency in Mandarin Chinese and/or Japanese is desirable but not required.
• 3-5 years of experience in engineering or technical sales with significant direct customer contact highly preferred.
• Must possess the ability to develop and maintain customer relationships through excellent communication skills and understanding of products.
• Knowledge of CRM systems and/or other sales systems is a plus.
• International travel, up to 6-10 weeks a year as business needs require.
• Availability to communicate with customers during local business hours in assigned territory when appropriate.
• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to connect with diverse groups of people.
• Ability to work under deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
• Ability to be a self-starter and take initiative.
• Must be authorized to work in the US on a permanent basis.

A reasonable estimate of the base salary range for this role is $70,000 - $90,000. Please note that actual salaries may vary within the range, or be above or below the range, based on factors including, but not limited to, education, training, experience, professional achievement, business need, and location. This role is bonus/and or incentive eligible.
