Job summary

SEIU Local 521 is seeking an Internal Organizer to work with members across multiple jurisdictions within the 521 area. The role focuses on organizing campaigns, developing leaders, and coordinating community efforts for clerical, blue‑collar, professional and service workers in the public and private sectors.

The position requires willingness to travel, long hours, and a strong commitment to social and economic justice. Compensation reflects experience and the union’s compensation policies.

Qualifications

• Willingness to travel frequently within local jurisdiction.
• Willingness to work long and irregular hours, including nights and weekends.
• Strong commitment to social and economic justice and organizing the unorganized through the labor movement.
• At least one year of experience as a full‑time external organizer or equivalent.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills and good listening.
• Ability to develop and execute detailed organizing plans.
• Ability to engage diverse workers and build relationships across groups.
• Bilingual English/Spanish preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

• Identify, recruit, train, develop stewards and leaders.
• Lead plans for worksite campaigns on issues like budgets, contracts and safety.
• Create and edit leaflets, proposals and newsletters to support campaigns.
• Negotiate or assist in contract negotiations and strike preparation.
• Monitor stewards and officers in grievances and appeals; follow through as needed.
• Meet timelines and procedures related to contracts, bylaws and policies.
• Encourage political involvement and hold officials accountable.
• Lead residual organizing campaigns and recruit members.
• Lead staff or community committees and serve as a spokesperson.
